Ok, i'm all confused.

With a posible new computer on the horison,. i would like to know the bigh thing about dual core. I know that Lo-mac does not support it. However, I heard you can run lockon on one core and other applications (TS, HL, TIR, the profile for my X52) on the other with out harming the games FPS. Is this true or am i hearing things (as i often do. lol) And is dual core worth it?

Thanks

Yes you can do that, and it can prevent any stutering since you would have a dedicated core to teh game alone.

Worth, its definetly worth it for multitasking, you can have two intense full CPU resource using programs at the same time.

However there is not much out there that actually take advantege of the two cores at once. Too complicated to code these things afaik.

The only peice of software I know that uses two cores is some video encoder, might be Divx.

No Dual Core is relatively new, and since Lock On was developed in the earlier part of this decade wasn't written in Dual Core... as a matter of fact I don't think that there is anything that is Dual Core as of yet...

But yes Lock On runs very nicely with this type of processor at present..

And rumor has it that Ed is actually looking into writing code for a Dual Core in the future..

So it just stands to reason that its a good investment to go in this direction..

Yes, regardless of single threaded aplications. It will run everything better TODAY. In addition single core CPU on sale are all low end, and uderperforming compared to multi core. Im gettting one quad core in a few months. I never bought a top of the line PC by myself and I think its time has arrived. :D

And YEs you can load some background activities to the second core and gain further FPS from it.

Not entirely so - dual/quad processors are long present in servers and professional work stations, but were to expensive for ordinary users. One sim that supports dual core processors is (here we go) Falcon4. Falcon uses both cores and shows a significant boost.

I soooo wish LockOn would run as smooth and stable at 70Fps as does Falcon 4.0 with FreeFalcon4... and look as good as it does now :D

Ok thanx guys. Dual Core is definitaly on the list insted of another, (faster ) pentium 4.

Pinnacle Studio Ver. 10 utilizes both cores. However the code is not optimized so improvement of dual over single core is about 10% with Studio.

Aeroscout, make sure you get a Core 2 Duo (64 bit) processor and not old Dual Core (32 bit). There is a significant difference in performance. E4300 are really dirt cheap aand have a lot of OC potential.

Supreme commander RTS is going to harness the full power of 4 cores. Im looking forward to this like mad. My other type of preferred games are RTS's.

I owned C&C and Dune titles, among others.

I'm keenly anticipating SC as well...I've only got an X2 4400 but it should still have benefit over a single core. Yup, have already got my pink permission slip from the gf to spend next weekend doing nothing but SC (oh, and a 504 campaign flight...in case Smudge is reading this ;)).

Ok, heres the processor I'm looking at currently.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115004

this comp isn't comming for a while, so the prices are going to be going down any way. It does happen to be 64 bit compatable.

BTW. Does any one here know for sure if my current comp (see my sig) has an ATX or BTX mother bord configuration. i dont know what the difference is and weather or not i have the ATX one. Is there a way i can tell by just looking at it? i'm looking at ATX mother bords.

ATX just refers to the shape and size of the motherboard - that's all.

IIRC the vast majority of desktop motherboards are ATX. Google should reveal a bit more.

Should only be relevant if you want to re-use the same case.

edit - Google says . . . . . that BTX was a new layout that Intel was proposing, and which seems to have now flopped. No further development on it after September 2006.

And the Dimension 2400 apparently has a Micro ATX motherboard, so watch out if you want a new motherboard that'll physically fit into the case . . . .

As regards the processor - I've got an E6400, and as of now it is running perfectly happily at 2.5GHz and is lapping up the Black Shark beta :)

Others have had more success with overclocking this chip - 2.6 to 2.8 on standard cooling seems to be fairly common.

If you're going to be waiting a while for your new PC, you might want to get one a little further up the range - the higher-spec Core 2 Duo CPUs should overclock just a touch better.

Thanx, but I'm not looking at a high end system, just something better than my current crap.

If the price goes down, then great! i wont have to spend as much. lol

If it does go down signifigantly, then i'll definitaly go for the better stuff.

So, I assume ATX micro is different than just ATX. Ok, a new case then.

and what do you reccomend as a decent power suply? I'm looking around 480W-500W

Yeah, an E6400 even at standard speeds will certainly outperform your current PC ;)

New case and new PSU required, yep. What rating on the PSU depends what graphics card you might end up getting . . . .

For a 7900 series or an X1900 series, 450W will probably suffice.

For Nvidia's DX10-capable 8800 powerhouse, add another hundred watts.

For ATI's new DX10-capable card, add another hundred watts on top of that . . . .

But then we're on to graphics cards, which is a different (if no less vital) question - depends heavily on budget and timing.

lol, that is a large card.

I'm looking at the Nvidia 7900GS. (I hope it will suport DX10) so the 450W should be good. thanks. and what should i do about Fans?
