Need help deciding on PCI USB Card

As I keep getting more and more stuff to plug into the PC, can anyone recommend a PCI USB Card? I would prefer that over a hub.

 

Maybe someone could help explain also like the PCI lanes and how that relates to how many drives are plugged in.

 

So in addition to the PCI USB card, I want to add another SSD, either the m2 (the motherboard use nvme and sata for m2) or just a 2.5 ssd, that depends on price. but I just don't want to strain anything

 

Also nervous about using a m2 drive near the gpu.

Pretty much any USB 3.1 is fine. The PCI card will only use 2 of your 20 or 24 PCI-E lanes. These are chipset lanes and not the same as the GPU. You're fine to slap one in and the nvme.

Oculus Rift made some recommendation for PCI-E extension cards for USBs. You can start from there if you want.

NVMe is absolutely fine near your CPU.

That was one of the factors on getting my MB for my build, I didn't want to run out of usb ports for rift, joysticks, pedals etc.

 

1 x USB 3.1 front panel connector port(s)

 

2 x USB 3.1 Gen 2 port(s) (2 at back panel, , Type-A + USB Type-CTM)

 

6 x USB 3.1 Gen 1 port(s) (4 at back panel, blue, 2 at mid-board)

 

6 x USB 2.0 port(s) (4 at back panel, black, 2 at mid-board)

 

I still need to use a power hub for a few things, if I didn't use the corsair link, I wouldn't need to use a hub.:)

 

 

and on that note! Weedwacker, are you running anything from the (internal USB headers)

+1 100% better if possible. Those slot adapters with cable sell for little money on amazon and ebay. need one myself to have 2 more 3.1. Better than a card

Didn't even see those, great excuse to use the 5.25 slot aswell. only issue is i won't be able to close the door, that kinda sucks.

 

I will check this out more, only issues i've read so far (haven't had time to really dig into this) is some of those pci cards that are 7 ports actually only have 4 or 3 dedicated ports per usb and then the last 3 or 4 are sharing bandwidth like a usb hub.

I wonder if this would be a similiar issue though with this. I see it has one usb to the 20pin connection. Or is it one of those 20 pin connections supports up to 4 ports? I was just skimming the manual now too lol.

To max perform, I believe 20 pin usb 3.0 connector socket allows two usb 3.0.

 

You would go for something like this, two 20 pin leads to 4 usb 3.0 female, it's on the rear too, so no need to worry about the door.:)

I just checked, one of those 20pin usb 3 ports is being used by the case (has 2 3.0 ports on the top front. one is still free and from what I have read, a 20pin can support 2 3.0 usb female ports. If you add a hub, it will introduce latency (not sure how much of a impact though, maybe for transferring large data).

 

I could get a extra two 3.0 usb A female slots that way, btw i couldn't even find the 4 port 2 20pin connection you posted lol.

 

 

also i might need a extension to get that to snake around the gpu. Another thing I just realized is that the gpu blocks 2 PCIe x1 slots, i have a wifi card in 1 slot at the bottom, then i have the pciex8 and pciex4 slots still available. What really confuses me is the slots are all the same size as the pciex16.

 

 

This also goes back to me trying to figure out how many PCI lanes I can take up and how many I am currently using.

Yes, I have one of these in my rig. I plugged it into the very bottom pcie slot (near the power supply), the plugs were long enough to reach the headers. I think mine was usb 2.0 as I plugged in my warthog throttle and stick and combat pedals. All works well, never had any usb issues. My mobo is Asus stryx z270f.

These are the two different headers

 

 

 

From what I gather, 3.0 is for large data transfers and also is seems to be important for the Rift's HMD but not the sensors.

 

Not sure about having alot of usb stuff plugged in and power draw and all that, or latency in game controllers.

On Z170/270/370 boards, one of the PCIe slots ( usually #4 ) is likely sharing lanes with one of your additional USB3.x headers. It's an either/or, you cannot use both. Read the manual for this.
