dureiken Posted March 29, 2018 Posted March 29, 2018 Hi, I just would like to know if it would worth it to upgrade my computer ? to play in VR with a rift for DCS. My 6600k is under water and OCed to 4.6ghz, and I have a 1080ti, 16 GB DDR4. Thanks a lot
Verde Posted March 29, 2018 Posted March 29, 2018 Single core performance matters, i had oportunity to try many cpus. Stay with the one who gives the most Ghz with last 3 gens and you will be ok. I stayed with 7600k @ 5.0ghz.
remi Posted March 29, 2018 Posted March 29, 2018 Hold off on upgrading. #1: DCS 2.5 is very much in beta, and to have a truly awesome experience, you should expect software that behaves as you expect. Think about plane-spotting visibility WIP, optimizations WIP, graphic performance enhancements WIP. #2: Current Rift hardware is antiquated by today's standards. Horrible screen-door effect, lens distortions, and poor performance (<90 FPS) with current GPU/CPU hardware. If you want the best experience, you need to wait for next gen Rift/Google or just get a Vive 2.0. #3: Next gen CPUs and GPUs are literally months away, and upgrading to an old processor which still suffers from security lapses by Intel is a very short-sighted plan. Don't listen to the curmudgeons on this forum who say you should buy old hardware at the end of release cycles. Makes no sense at all. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Mr_sukebe Posted March 29, 2018 Posted March 29, 2018 I'd be surprised if you'd see a genuinely significant improvement with an 8700 as of right now. Having said that, Vulkan is planned in the "nearish" future. That "might" make better use of additional cores, which Kabylake will have. My thought would be to wait and see feedback from other Kabylake users before splashing the cash. If you've cash burning a whole in your pocket, probably more useful to throw another 16GB of ram in your PC. 7800x3d, 5080, 64GB, PCIE5 SSD - Oculus Pro - Moza (AB9), Virpil (Alpha, CM3, CM1 and CM2), WW (TOP and CP), TM (MFDs, Pendular Rudder), Tek Creations (F18 panel), Total Controls (Apache MFD), Jetseat
cichlidfan Posted March 29, 2018 Posted March 29, 2018 If you've cash burning a whole in your pocket, probably more useful to throw another 16GB of ram in your PC. This is probably the best advice. Unfortunately, until the memory leak is fixed, this is just a bandaid that might not be needed in the long term. Given the current cost of memory I might just stick with what you have and play something else for a while. Demon_ Posted March 30, 2018 Posted March 30, 2018 (edited) Hi 6600K to 8700K worth the upgrade? Yes if you send me your cpu. And as a bonus, you will be my best friend. Edited March 30, 2018 by Demon_ Attache ta tuque avec d'la broche.
nachomaga Posted March 30, 2018 Posted March 30, 2018 Don’t know about the 6600k, but I didn’t notice any fps gain in my 8700k in Turbo (4.4 Ghz) and OCed (5Ghz). 1080ti and 16GB DRAM too.
BitMaster Posted March 30, 2018 Posted March 30, 2018 (edited) There are times when my CPU usage is well beyond 50% for a few seconds, like 65%, 70%, hardly more but those are the peaks I often get. You can fly an offline Quick Mission with 12-16% CPU, no question, but DCS also has areas/situations/modes where it now really needs cores and MHz. It is NOT the highest fps you look for, what you want is to raise the lowest fps as high as you can. Above values are from 5.2G/2.1G oc and all apps closed, sleek config. edit: so my initial idea...if you tax a 6-core to 60% @ 5.2G = 6x5.2x0.60 =18,72GHz in use a 6600k is a 4 core ~4.5G... yeah..it's close..but that little 6600k has to give all it got to make it....4x4.5 = 18GHz at full tilt make the math, numbers dont lie. dureiken Posted March 31, 2018 Author Posted March 31, 2018 ok thanks a lot for your answer ! I OCed my 6600k to 4.9Ghz and I will wait a while :) thanks !
BitMaster Posted March 31, 2018 Posted March 31, 2018 Headroom is all you want. The only component which is made for 100% usage and performing great up there is your GPU, whenever ANY other device gets close to 100% usage you have a real problem, no matter what you compute.
