The steam version of DCS 2.5 released a couple of days back. After a long 9.6 GB download I was very excited about the in game graphics so I loaded a custom mission (made in the earlier version) for the Huey and the trees looked the same :(. Was this done to improve performance? because I was expecting better trees from the videos I saw.

I have the steam version of DCS World. Can't find DCS_updater.exe

Steam stores all apps in Steam/Steamapps/common/

YOu can also right click the game in the steam library, click "properties" and within the menu that pops up "browse local files"

Dcs_updater.exe will be in the /bin/ folder from the dcs installation directory -

If the file just isn't there in the steam version, instead try verifying integrity of game files from the library. Sorry, I don't have the steam edition but the issue is one I've had and have known a few people to experience. Not sure the cause but the "dcs_updater.exe repair" has been the solution for us.

Verified the game files. All validated correctly. I said in my original post that the trees looked "almost" the same. I meant that the difference was not too great. Also the trees in the promotional video look much more realistic than in game. However the objects are better lighted now and the terrain from a distance looks much better.

Well, all the promo vids were shot in late or early mission hours, because that's indeed the only time new trees look good. In midday conditions they look rather flat and poor, especially when comparing to the other Russian sim on the market, which is still head and shoulders above DCS in this particular aspect.

The main difference, however, is the new speedtree algorithm in 2.5 can render insane amounts and density of them with still great framerate, something which would be impossible with the old tech.

Do you have deferred shading enabled in your settings? The other suggestion I have seen is to delete the folders FXO and Metashaders from your User/Saved Games/DCS.openbeta folder.

Do you have a screen shot of what they look like?

As StandingCow asked, you might not enable the deferred shading. If you wanna a better view of trees, terrain, lights, it has to be enabled whilst disable the MSAA, set the AA in your nvidia control panel, and use the flat shadow. Otherwise you might got some stutters.
