Open Invitation to DCS Helicopter Pilots...

We are a group of enthusiastic DCS helicopter pilots based mainly in Europe operating within the world-wide virtual 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion, (http://1stcavdiv.conceptbb.com). As the “8Mates”, we fly missions most Sunday evenings, with support and training on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, demand-dependent, although you will often find friends to fly with at any time.

 

While competent in other airframes, our group specializes in the Mi-8, preferring to use pilotage and electronic navigation to fly missions with DCS F10 ‘map only’ (i.e. all assets and aircraft positions etc. are concealed). The aim of the “8MATES”,is to become as competent as DCS and personal skills allow, with close-formation, threat environments and operational procedures being standard. Several of our group love home-builds and use genuine Mi-8 & Mi-24 cyclic and collectives in their rigs and many use VR exclusively.

 

This is an open invitation to any like-minded individuals or groups who want to fly with us regularly on a part or full-time basis, with Mi-8’s or any other rotary airframe. We are seeking to expand our European group and gain friends of a similar level of commitment and interest.

 

229th AHB membership is a requirement.

 

A basic level of competency on the UH-1H will need to be attained at some stage if not already competent. (Support and assistance is readily available) The 229th has access to unparalleled RL knowledge and experience with RL qualified personnel for training, guidance, oversight and standards.

 

Primary language is English, so a basic understanding is necessary, however in-game inter-flight can be any language. (In our Mi-8 group we already have German native language members, French is spoken too, as well as Russian!)

 

Any skill level is most welcome including complete novices, but a genuine interest or passion for rotary wings and regular group interaction is essential to maximize support and group benefits.

I was thinking about it till I saw two things your too advanced for I’m a new Huey driver with about 20 hours in it. The other was you have one unit flying the mi-8. I was hoping for four units one for each airframe the mi-8, uh-1, ka-50 and the various gazelles.

 

Not to high jack you thread but the majority of non affiliated helo pilots are new otherwise the would be affiliated.that may mean they flown mostly in single player mode or just started like myself.

I know. Myself would like to see on session a week of regimented training starting at a working up to z building on what you learned last week. First week would be three or four items one sit in on a full breifing for the night after roll call. Then maybe start the S.C. from cold and dead after requesting startup permission, then the last would be a hover check. That’s lesson one except for shut down then a debrief then if time allows then maybe some independent practice.

 

Next lesson roll call, breifing, taxi,debrief practice. You may add something else to this lesson but remember they may not be that familiar with the start up so it may take time the getting in to a hover after the hovercheck and completion of configuration after the hover check then you hover taxi around stopping on que and following ground controls direction which will run you all around the airfield following taxi lines stopping where indicated calling ground as needed.

 

So it should take several nights before your even airborne if you are really new. Learn comm as you need them so you will know when to use them. After the fight and VFr flights you’ll get in to add then next week vhf nav then the following week you get an ils pattern then next to some transport in a civil area, no dodging sa fire. Next week you would do slings. After that you learn to use the ai crew members and their weapons, the following week the pilot takes control of the flares, next week the rockets, the next week you do the guns. Now you competed the first two phases of training the third phase you put all the lesson before to work you do advance combat traing for 8 weeks ednding with an exam of sorts you’ll create your mission, breifing it, fly it and if all goes well you graduate if not you redo phase three the first time if any of these were not good mission design. Miz breifing, execution of the mission or you were shot down or missed every target if you survived most of these the may retrain on the specific issues briefing each mission up to you final where you create, design and breifing,execute the mission .

 

Phase one is basic ac training phase two is were you learn transport/sling, weapons I didn’t mention it. I can on request .look at the actual. USA training field guides pull out the tastings for each mission some are knowledge of, some are can do, some are evaluated iirc there are five different status for each tasking. For training I would like the introduce, explain, practice and evaluation type of learning for the course. Then when they graduate the entry rotary wing course you move to you home unit where they evaluate you and run you through the readiness levels until you pass your rl1 test the first is rl3 then rl2 and finally rl1 after that you are full mission capable.`

I see your other thread about Helicopter Flight School and the idea of paying for it. So I am answering both here.

 

When we say "A basic level of competency on the UH-1H will need to be attained at some stage if not already competent" it does not mean "otherwise don't turn up..." At 229th, training in the Huey is standard, and DCS pilots come there to learn. If you are a serious student, you will find several highly experienced Real Life Instructor Pilots there who will happily train you from zero knowledge to Basic Wings up to Senior Wings. There is no charge for this! I's a community.

 

At 8MATES, we have all gone through Huey Basic Wings, as it is expected in order to train on Mi-8, and to be a part of 229th in general. To participate in complex missions as an effective combat pilot, this training is necessary, both for your own enjoyment, and for team playing. A lot of effort goes into mission designs by our dedicated builders, so it is essential that participants have the commensurate skills to be reliable and capable. No point in setting up low-level waypoints in a high-threat environment, if the pilots cannot handle it!

 

I see you are a member of BSD, as am I. Due to time-zone limitations, I now devote my flying hours to 229th and to our European times. We fly joint squad missions with BSD though, and that is an area for much future development.

 

So if you want some training on Hueys, without feeling you need to pay by the hour, try 229th and see what they have to offer. But my understanding is that the same training is available at BSD, so you should probably discuss it there too. I am sure any of the helo pilots there with Readiness Levels 1 and 2 will happily bring you up to speed, and you will get qualified to a standard you want in no time at all....

Getting back into DCS lately now that I have my setup all working correctly again. About 2/3 of my DCS time has been spent rotary, mostly in the Ka-50 and Gazelle, but I also have the Huey (and very basic quote-unquote competence in it). Do not have the Mi-8 but mostly out of lack of interest from my few friends who DCS. If you are still active I might very well be interested!

 

Also curious about your setup for CV1. That's been the main focus of my return, but having real issues with target spotting. Even lowly ZU-23 emplacements have become a real threat especially with all the new trees in Caucasus... any tips for overcoming that (without resorting to labels on or anything silly like that) would be appreciated.

Hi guys. just found this thread and I was looking for something like this. I just got some questions.

 

1. I only have the KA-50 and I love flying it, do I need any other rotary ship to be part of something like this. Because of the limitation of time I prefer to focus on one to master.

 

2. I live in the US, I know thats going to be a problem? it's there another group or you guys don't mind?

The the229th is world wide. There are bodies here in the USA, Australia, two in Europe. But we fly all rotarys so you would be fine go to the website and put in your app

since quite some time already, I have been looking for something similar like your Squadron and I´m happy that I stumbled about your thread.

 

I´ve read through your Initial post and have already visited the provided URL´s. But bevor I send an aplication, I´d like to ramp up some questions, that concern me and my "flying preferations".

 

I´m from Germany and I´m working in 3 Shift, which mostly includes late- and nightshifts. Given the Situation that I´m scheduled to work for most of the official Training days, would it be possible to keep up practicing even outside of those official Training days? So to speak, will those ones "count" if I meet the requirements in order to get the wings/qualify? Such a Scenario is just an assumption, but its somethings I´d like to know, as my schedule is covering between 1 and 3 weekends regulary.

 

secondly, I own three of the meanwhile 4 DCS Helicopters, I do not own the Mi8 as I have no interest in it (I used to have it but gave it away to a friend who loved it even more (via ED Support), thus I´m certain about it). My current Focus rests on the Huey which I´m flying a lot recently (whereas I still have to master some topics). Will there be a place for a Huey Driver only? (which doesnt mean, that I wont get Hands on the other 2 ones). Is it actually posible to become a dedicated Transport and Support Pilot? Thats something I´m interested in the most.

I love helicopters very much and can't wait for the Mi-24. The Ka-50 was my first DCS module ever - in 2013 - and then I purchased the Mi-8 upon release to public.

As much as I would love to fly with dedicated Mi-8 pilots such as yourselves, I restrain myself and always have refrained from joining any squadrons or any virtual flight groups. Not sure if I ever will, but who knows. And the reason is simple. I like being independent and fly whenever I want and especially whenever I can. I hit the servers' list and some TS channels I have to check out my mates and see what they're flying. Either I join them or I go solo. Now, if I could simply check out the 8Mates once in a while and see what they're doing and if it appeals to me I'd join them, that'd be more like it to me. But that's not what you're after here and I totally accept that.

However, you could fly on my server if you want, Cold War 1947 - 1991:

Currently running 10 missions. The server rotates every 4-5 hours and a new mission is loaded. Soon I'll replace the missions with one dynamic mission. With airbases and FARP's can be captured and recaptured multiple times, Mi-8 and UH-1 pilots become vital for that. With modern fighters being excluded (MiG-21 and F-5 are the main airplanes), helicopter pilots have a safer arena to fly in.

Once the trailer is ready, the dynamic mission goes online.

EDIT:

I like the fact, you guys rely on your navigation systems only rather than using the cheap feature of the F-10 map. I have exactly that on my server. No planes shown on the F-10 map. No message kills (just like in real life, fly around and see if you hit something or have your wingman confirm the kill). No easy communications, etc.

This is great! We fly our missions on Sunday evenings too, maybe we can do some joint operations? We do have a ka50 and a mi8 squadron within the wing it would be great to exchange som experience and train together !

Wow! The man himself. Yes its true, so far you will be flying the Mi-8 with 3x 8 Mates in the upcoming tournament :pilotfly:.

 

We're a great mix of casual and serious. We like big events, and tight formations. Yeah we really like our pilotage, dead reckoning, and doppler aided navigation. I don't even have the GPS.

Sounds like something I want to do, but unfortunately I work weekends so I'd never be able to participate in the sunday missions. Are there ever missions on weekdays? Is there a minimum requirement for missions participated in per month/year?

Hi Mezelf,

 

Yes, we have weekday activities too. Both Tuesdays and Thursdays have events, though usually more of the training variety.

 

Our Sunday events are run at 1900Zulu time, so it may depend on your time-zone if you think Sundays don't work for you.

 

We have members all over the planet, and some are flying with us at 2am, and some at 2pm!
