My fairly new Predator took a hit that made it unusable and am looking at another to replace it. I would like to go with the 2560x1440, but am concerned about the size of text in radio messages and wingman commands etc. At 1920x1080 I can read them comfortably, but I can see how much smaller and I might have trouble. How much smaller will it be? Any examples?

2560x1600 is OK.

I have edited the CommandMenu.lua as follows,

to make the font bigger.

local fontSize = 18

local fontSizeCaption = 18

local menuCaptionHeight = 30

I forgot to add, this will be a 27in. monitor. A new GPU is an upgrade in the near future depending on the prices.

27 inch screen is a decent size for WQHD resolution. 970 GTX is delivering smooth framerates if you have a good CPU and is enough for Non-VR.

By the way, new Nvidia GPU generation will be released this July/August the earliest, changes in GPU prices are likely.

Before I bite the bullet for this: ASUS ROG SWIFT PG279Q 27" 2560x1440 IPS 165Hz 4ms G-SYNC , I have a couple more questions.

Does DCS allow you to play in a diff resolution than native? I have read lots of problems can crop up, but does this apply to the same 16:9 ratio? (Previous Predator was 1920x1080)

How is the target spotting in the higher resolution?

I know the forums are full of similar topics, but the search can get a little cumbersome.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend 1440p on a 970. Imo I'd suggest 1080p max, especially if you're actually wanting to achieve those higher framerates to justify your fancy monitor. I'd say 6-8gb GPU is recommended for 1440p. Of course, it depends on the game you're playing, etc. But DCS is a power hog. It's ALWAYS worse case scenario.

@Demon

Afaik that only applied to early releases. My brother has a 970 and has never had issue.

1440P is a good balance for eye candy and performance, now that DCS 2.5.1 beta only uses DS, you may struggle with the 970 and will need to lower some settings. I can run DCS 2.5.1 with at near max graphic settings with a 1070 @ 1440P.

"i7-6700k @ 4.0GHz"

Have you got a decent cpu cooler? bump that CPU up to 4.8 GHz.

Text is very readable on the 27inch.

I had a 980GTX and now have a 1080Ti connected to my Asus PG278Q Gsync screen with 144Hz @ 1440p.

With 1.5.x this was plenty, 4GB VRAM was enough and my world was shining.

before 2.x came out I stepped up to a 1080Ti and I can tell you, if you want to max it out, ALL THE WAY, then forget the 970, dont even try highish settings.

I have set it all to maximum to enjoy the scenery and I can manage not to drop below 50 fps worst case scenario in caucasus map. Most of the time it's 70ish and sometimes above 100 fps.

Those fps values refer to Ka-50 and Mi-8 mainly, those are heavy tasking modules, online on crowded servers. WCS, not kindergarden party offline.

The card that can run DCS at 4k with all-in has yet to be announced. A 1080Ti needs all it has got to make it a 50+ experience at 1440p !!. Not a 100fps as I had before with my 980 and 1.5.x.

A 970 is maybe a medium 1080p card. I am pretty sure it cannot handle it with all on high/extreme and all sliders full in.

A 2080Ti might pull 100fps, ...maybe

I defo do not mean a 1180, that card in FE wont pull more than any overclocked 1080Ti from all that I have read yet. The card is supposed to be 5-8% faster. heck, my card ius 20% faster than a 1080Ti-FE...so no, not a 1180.

2080Ti, the one AFTER the 1180Ti and AFTER the 2080.

You need ~ 4x the power to drive DCS at 100fps 4k wcs if you take 50fps @ 1440p as a baseline.

3080Ti ???

2560*1440=3.686.400

3840*2160=8.294.400

ratio 2.25

so it's rather 5x the power

4080Ti ??

I dunno..LoL

As I said in post #5, a new card is in the near future. The monitor is a must have. If the 970 will buy me some time, I can lower the settings. I would like this monitor to last a few years and don't want to replace it for a good while.

Go for it then. You will have to lower some settings indeed, however. With my 1070 I lost on average between 15 and 20 fps on Caucasus map when buying a new monitor and going from 1200p to 1440p (high-ish settings).
