1X is the usual default.

And I believe you also need to be in A/A T/R

hey, sir.so what you mean is that i should turn on the A/A while i'm using T/R mode?is that right?:book:

You first need to press the ON/OFF button on the low/right on the UFC. The UFC then states ON 1. Probably.

No, you don't need A/A enabled to receive the carrier TACAN.

In ME, check the TACAN channel set for the carrier. As stated above, it defaults to 1X, but you can set it to anything you like. (I set JOHN C STENNIS to 27X, and the identifier (below the channel selection in ME) to "JCS" (no quotes).

To read the TACAN, I then perform the following steps on the UFC:

1. Press the TCN button

2. Observe that T/R option is marked with a ":" (if not, press the 1st option button)

3. Press the ON/OFF button

4. Observe that "ON 1" shows up in the UFC scratchpad.

5. Press CLEAR

6. Press 2

7. Press 7

8. Press ENTER

9. Press the 4th option button to mark the X with a ":"

10. On the HSI, upper left corner, observe that the selected TCN station information is displayed.

The TCN selection does not need to be boxed on the HSI unless you want to display the TACAN navigation cues in the HUD.

I must be bugged. I have no options whatsoever to set the TACAN for the Stenis. Nothing in any of the advanced waypoints. nada, zip, zilch.

You do not use A/A with the carrier. T/R means you get range and bearing signals from ground TACAN stations (including carriers).

T/R and A/A is used with Air to Air comms (Tankers in other words) to give bearing and range to and from the aircraft you are tuned in to.

Nope David. Don't have that.

Hmm. I may have an answer possibly. My Stenis used to be the other US carrier which I put in as a placeholder and when the Hornet was released I changed the unit type to the Stenis carrier. Will delete the unit entirely and put the Stenis back in. Maybe it didn't like being changed from the old carrier to the new.

I'm not sure if this is a bug, and I don't have a track, but picking up the station seems to be hit or miss. For example, on a mission where I stationed the carrier in eastern strait, I had no issues picking up the carrier; when I ran a mission stationing the carrier in the western straits, I was unable to pick up the carrier despite being right on withing 2 nm of the ship. It was no joy at variable altitudes as well. I checked the tacan station multiple times in the me to ensure the stennis was emitting, or should have been, but was still unable to pick it up. I don't know if this is a bug or a LOS issue.

I haven't had the opportunity to check myself...but make sure there aren't airfields on the western straits that also operate on the same TACAN freq you used

All okay here. Keep in mind range and LOS.

My technique is to set the carrier TACAN to 74 to match the Stennis' ship number and change the callsign to read "CVN".

Makes it very unambiguous

I like that.

I believe that I read somewhere that, when setting up a TACAN channel for the boat, you also need to un check the box that says "Bearing" in order for the TACAN information to show up properly in the cockpit WITHOUT using the A/A function in the UFC. I will test this when I get back home from work.

Thanks Wags. Range and LOS was the issue. Appreciate it. Fantastic module! Eagerly awaiting additional systems and functionality to come online. Great job.

I've noticed the tacan symbology on the DDI not being green for the Stennis. After landing on the boat and taking off again, I didn't get the cues on the HUD anymore for the stationary TACAN. Is this an issue or just user error?

Also I noticed after taking off from the boat, the G-LIM is exed out and the AUTO PILOT message stayed even though I had it disabled via paddle switch. I did a shutdown and cold restart on the carrier 'cos I though I could pick up and actually use weapons this way (rearm).

Hold the paddle switch for 5 secs, it will go away.

I also met TACAN problem also.

I saw all above

TACAN only works when

Chn is default 1

and

T/R and A/A both chosen

Another time, during my last try, I made it work to me! guess what? I thought maybe the PC havn't recognized the default :T/R :X, so I switch them to other settings then switch back, try to let PC confirm or recognize, just when I switch :X to :Y ,TACAN works, But in mission editor, X is in gray color and can not be changed, so I have no choice leave it at X

that means in editor setting is 1X(even in editor I can do nothing to X) in cockpit TACAN works at 1Y

hope helpful for ED

maybe miss steps in menu? maybe a bug?

Hope let me know which part and how many conditions need to be met to let TACAN work.

BTW, friend YODA967, Your mission is start from ramp ? or start and runway or somthing else?

I ask because in the mission I made F18 is start from " takeoff from carrier" (a default start )

maybe you did any cold start step, connected to TACAN and the menu didn't print and make me miss some step? my DCS is 2.5.2.1.8.... update last night.

hope use TACAN ASAP

thank you
