KiraTheCat Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 I miscalculated, as the time-distance-fuel calculation isn't working yet, and got just a wee bit lower on fuel than I'd wished. Trapped aboard with 740lbs total remaining. Anyone best this yet? Also, anyone have a good measure on how much the F/A-18 burns at sea level (for bingo calculations)? My guess is that about 2000lbs is "it's time to go tanker hunting". Thanks, all!
joey45 Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 Try running out of fuel 10 seconds after trapping.. on ma mobile The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. ouPhrontis Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 I am curious about the military pilot's perspective on this; deliberately running low on fuel is a huge no-no in civil aviation, you'd be suspended pending investigation as to why. In the Mirage III it was typical to hit the circuit (VFR) at 130gall remaining .... enough for 2 circuits.
HawkDCS Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 (edited) Actually the max endurance has nothing to do with fuel flow. Max endurance is obtained by setting AoA at 5.6° and max range is obtained by setting AoA at 4.2° :) From natops performance charts. This is done off AoA not speed? I know the KIAS would change for diff Alt etc. But never knew that. Edited July 1, 2018 by HawkDCS Rig: 5960X @ 4.5GHZ 32GB 3000Mhz DDR4 Titan XP Dell 3415W 21:9 Thrustmaster Warthog

donkeyrider Posted July 2, 2018 Posted July 2, 2018 I am curious about the military pilot's perspective on this; deliberately running low on fuel is a huge no-no in civil aviation, you'd be suspended pending investigation as to why. In the Carrier documentary, a Hornet crew miscalculated the fuel and had to divert to a land base. I don't think they got to fly again that cruise and a board of review (or equivalent) was convened.
Snapps Posted July 3, 2018 Posted July 3, 2018 I’ve landed at a field just as my main gear touched down it ran out and all the light went off, nothing I’m proud of but I was amazed for a min that I made it back. Plus was a good reason to hit the parking break and watch it skid and do a 180, I grounded myself pending further investigation.
BSS_Sniper Posted July 3, 2018 Posted July 3, 2018 That may be true in commercial aviation, but not all civil aviation. That's not true. FAR Part 91 is 30 min remaining VFR day and 45 night, and 45 min IFR, after reaching the alt. 121 and 135 have stringent requirements as well.
