TheThumper Posted July 2, 2018 Posted July 2, 2018 Hello All, Just ordered a Samsung Odyssey and see where it connects via 1 HDMI and 1 USB port. My GX-980TI only has one HDMI port and I have my LCD Monitor connected to that. It also has 1 DVI and 3 DisplayPort connectors. Do I need to buy an adaptor? HDMI -> DVI or DisplayPort? I wanted to ask here to see what others, who have taken the plunge, have done when facing this problem. thanks in advance, ~Thump. Soma888 Posted July 2, 2018 Posted July 2, 2018 (edited) I ended up going the HDMI to Dispaly cable as same issue. Works well, next time I’ll prob get a card with 2 HDMI. Edited July 4, 2018 by Soma888
Rudel_chw Posted July 2, 2018 Posted July 2, 2018 I wanted to ask here to see what others, who have taken the plunge, have done when facing this problem. I have a GTX970 with a single HDMI .. connected the Oculus Rift to it and for the monitor I've got an adapter HDMI to DVI-D, like this: https://www.pcfactory.cl/producto/1274-cable-video-hdmi-dvi-d-1-8m (chilean store, but its a generic part available everywhere) For work: iMac mid-2010 of 27" - Core i7 870 - 6 GB DDR3 1333 MHz - ATI HD5670 - SSD 256 GB - HDD 2 TB - macOS High Sierra For Gaming: 34" Monitor - Ryzen 3600 - 32 GB DDR4 2400 - nVidia RTX2080 - SSD 1.25 TB - HDD 10 TB - Win10 Pro - TM HOTAS Cougar Mobile: iPad Pro 12.9" of 256 GB
TheThumper Posted July 2, 2018 Author Posted July 2, 2018 (edited) Thanks for the input, I guess I will have to hunt down an adapter! Going from HDMI to DVI means that if I am not using the VR headset I won't have sound :( Edited July 2, 2018 by TheThumper ~Thump. Rudel_chw Posted July 3, 2018 Posted July 3, 2018 Thanks for the input, I guess I will have to hunt down an adapter! Going from HDMI to DVI means that if I am not using the VR headset I won't have sound :( I hadnt even thought of it ... my PC uses a good set of external speakers, the Logitech X-5500 ... I suggest you get something like them :) For work: iMac mid-2010 of 27" - Core i7 870 - 6 GB DDR3 1333 MHz - ATI HD5670 - SSD 256 GB - HDD 2 TB - macOS High Sierra For Gaming: 34" Monitor - Ryzen 3600 - 32 GB DDR4 2400 - nVidia RTX2080 - SSD 1.25 TB - HDD 10 TB - Win10 Pro - TM HOTAS Cougar Mobile: iPad Pro 12.9" of 256 GB
FragBum Posted July 3, 2018 Posted July 3, 2018 Most mother boards have optical audio i/F does your monitor have optical input? If so you should be able to assign optical to the DVI source on the monitor as it'a audio. Control is an illusion which usually shatters at the least expected moment. BlacleyCole Posted July 3, 2018 Posted July 3, 2018 If you plan on going with the rift iirc reading that no other hdmi monitors ts may be used. I read it somewhere don’t know if it’s true and what happens if you do use more. BlackeyCole 20years usaf XP-11. DayGlow Posted July 3, 2018 Posted July 3, 2018 My gpu has 2 HDMI ports and it works fine with my rift and 4k monitor. My previous you only had a single HDMI port. I used a active displayport to HDMI 2.0 doggle worked with my rift fine. This Audi means you get audio as DP has audio as well. dburne Posted July 3, 2018 Posted July 3, 2018 I run a Rift and have two monitors. My 1080 Ti only has one HDMI. I used the HDMI for the Rift and used Display Port for the two monitors. Just change where you want the sound to come through via the little speaker icon on the windows taskbar. https://www.umart.com.au/Skymaster-Display-Port-to-HDMI-Cable-1-8m-M-M_29675G.html In my original post I put the wrong cable type e.g. DVI, sorry about that.
TheThumper Posted July 5, 2018 Author Posted July 5, 2018 Thanks so much for the great input. I ended up purchasing a HDMI to DisplayPort adapter and it works perfectly, just like Soma888 suggested. I now have my external monitor driven by the displayport (with sound!) and the HDMI port is driving the HMD. Really loving the VR, I actually experience some VR sickness, so working through that at the moment! As has been sad a 100 times before, never going back! thanks again! ~Thump.
