Hi, I was wondering if someone could help me with the dilemma I'm having regrading two options on upgrading my RAM memory.

My system specs are as follows:

CPU: Intel® Core™ i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 (Supported RAM: 1600 MHz, 1333 MHz, 1066 MHz, 1866 MHz, 2133 MHz DDR3)

Memory (RAM): Dual Channel, 8GB DDR3 1333 Mhz Kingston CL9, Voltage: 1.50 V

Graphic Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 4GB

Storage (HDD): Hitachi 500 GB

Display: SAMSUNG 1920 x 1080 pixels @ 24-75 Hz

My question is, should I go with dual channel 2 x 8GB DDR3 1866Mhz Kingston CL10 HyperX Fury Blue, or buy additional 2 x 4GB DDR3 1333Mhz Kingston CL9? Is there a noticeable boost in performance between the 1866 Mhz and 1333 Mhz RAM? Price wise, the difference is almost double. Any other advice regarding hardware, that may help improving the DCS performance is more than welcomed. Maybe overclocking the CPU ...

Thanks in advance,

Dejan

The RAM will run at the slowest stick. So getting 1866Mhz it will run at 1333Mhz.... From what I remember..

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

Yes that's true, but if I chose to go with the 1866Mhz I will sell the 1333Mhz RAM and get 2 x 8GB 1866Mhz DDR3 RAM.

That is correct. I tried mixing Mhz speeds and it ran at the lower Mhz, no matter what I did.

I just read the above post. Good chose.

Were I you, I would upgrade to an SSD/NVMe *first*. I'm sure the memory will be faster, but I don't know if it'll be "human perceivable" But I can promise you that going from a mechanical HD to SSD (never mind NVMe) *WILL* be noticed.

This is an old platform. Spend as less as possible and overclock the CPU.

Yesterday I put and 1TB 860 EVO SSD in my old "2013" PC and moved my DCS from existing HDD to the SSD and all my stuttering has gone. Best hardware result I've ever had. Can't believe it. OS is on an old 256gb EVO840 SSD. Rest of the PC is 4770k de-lidded @4.5ghz, 16gig DDR2 1866, 780Ti graphics. My thinking is I'll only put components into this pc that can be migrated to the new pc, like the SSD and an next gen video card. Anyway, the effect of the SSD is so noticeable I think it's given this pc a 12 month reprieve.

Definitely I'm getting an SSD asap. I hope that I'll be able to fly the upcoming Tomcat at decent settings and fps. I just don't know should I go for 250GB or 500GB. It will contain onlly the OS and DCS.

Well I'm up to 140GB just with DCS and all the maps. Main drive is 500GB M.2 with Photoshop and a few other apps and updates I'm already push on 400GB, where does the space go...? LOL. Like to leave at least 100 free always.

Luckily now you can install oculus VR games elsewhere, so they have been installed on my other SSD's with the steam games. If you can afford it I would go with a 500, it will go quicker than you think and you need to leave some room. You can always whack in another SSD at some point if you need to.

Depends on the mods/maps you have. But I would definitely go with 500GB.

I think when it comes to SSD's and space, best rule of thumb - get the most that you can afford.
