Sickdog Posted September 26, 2018 Posted September 26, 2018 Hi guys, So I’ve been holding out with the hopes for a new CV2 combined with latest Nvidia RTX cards to upgrade my system. I’m relatively happy with DCS and my VR experience but like everyone else desire the best performance/experience combined with an intelligent purchase. I’ve read a lot on here and played with my settings to find the best balance of performance to visual quality (which is somewhat subjective I realize), so assuming I’m getting the best experience i can get right now with my rig and need “more of something” in my system, here’s my question: Is it worth it to upgrade from a EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti to a 1080 Ti? I know it’s too soon to recommend the latest RTX cards for VR, but seems like the general tone has been it won’t be worth the money for DCS with VR. And since there’s no NEW oculus hardware ideal for DCS in foreseeable future, I’m thinking of just upgrading to a 1080 Ti. I’d entertain the idea of upgrading other components of my PC as it’s all approaching 3 years old, but seems to me that the 980 video card is the bottleneck according to my system performance while playing DCS in VR (not sure if that’s a reliable way of determining it) the rest of my specs are: •EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti •500GB SSD Samsung 850 EVO •Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR4 DRAM 2666MHz (PC4-21300) C16 memory kit for DDR4 Systems •ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VIII HERO ALPHA ATX DDR4 3000 LGA 1151 Motherboards Intel Boxed Core I7-6700K 4.00 GHz 8M Processor Cache 4 LGA 1151 And of course all the other usual peripherals,HOTAS, and Oculus Ridt CV1, not sure if any other details of my system are necessary for this question. So again, my questions is will I see a discernible difference in performance if I just upgrade to the 1080 Ti with my system? Thanks a bunch in advance to anyone willing to give their $0.02. :) TM Warthog, TPR, TM MFDs, Pimax Crystal, AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D. ASUS ROG Crossair X670E Hero AMD X670, G Skill Trident Z5 DDR5 64GB
rrohde Posted September 26, 2018 Posted September 26, 2018 I think you would benefit from the extra VRAM you gain (8 vs 11Gb) in stepping up to the 1080Ti - that's what did some time ago as well and I am quite happy with that move. ram0506 Posted September 26, 2018 Posted September 26, 2018 I also changed from an EVGA 980Ti to my actual EVGA 1080Ti last year. The performance gain was at about 30-40% in VR. Lensman Posted September 26, 2018 Posted September 26, 2018 Yep, nice improvement for me coming from a 980 to the 1080Ti . Got one for a good price too, just after the RTX cards were announced. BTW that 6700K will clock nicely up to about 4.7 :) Intel Core i7 6700K @ 4.5GHz. Asus-Z170-PRO MB CORSAIR H105 HYDRO CPU COOLER. EVGA GTX 1080Ti FTW3 Elite. 16GB DDR4 2666MHZ HYPERX SAVAGE. dburne Posted September 26, 2018 Posted September 26, 2018 Agree, yes the 1080 Ti would be a nice improvement. Sickdog Posted September 27, 2018 Author Posted September 27, 2018 Guys, thanks so much for the input, that’s exactly what I was hoping for! Don’t think it’s worth waiting much longer, I may just pull the trigger soon. TM Warthog, TPR, TM MFDs, Pimax Crystal, AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D. cordite Posted September 27, 2018 Posted September 27, 2018 May be worth waiting a bit longer, to see how the new Pimax works with the 2080ti.

Thanks a bunch in advance to anyone willing to give their $0.02. :) It comes down to one thing. Can you afford the 2080TI and live with the fact that you may not be able to fully utilise the performance for a year or so? Most people would not dissuade you from upgrading that 980TI to a 2080Ti in the same way as if you you were upgrading from a 1080TI. The performance gains buying the 20 series cards for VR at this moment in time are minimal as the headset (and DCS) just cannot soak up the advantages the new hardware offers at this moment in time. However this will change. What the 2080TI offers is a little futureproofing. If you upgrade components in rotation, on a planned cycle of three years as do I, then the 20 series makes sense if you can justify the cost. It really is down to your own particular circumstances and the performance of your other hardware. Vulkan will be a godsend when implemented. Only you can decide what is best for you. wormeaten Posted September 28, 2018 Posted September 28, 2018 Be smart and upgrade it with used GTX 1080ti. Used 1080ti is around 400 - 450$ and will be good to a period until AMD lunch 7nm Vega 20 consumer GPU. My point is not necessary to buy AMD but this will definitely force Nvidia to lower price or release something much better than latest RTX 20xx graphics cards. Right now RTX 20xx not worth that money and wait for AMD or next-gen Nvidia is too long. And there is a lot of used 1080ti on market right now so use this opportunity and gap this bridge until real advanced GPU get on the market in next year or two. Remember Intel also entering in GPU market in 2020. Maybe we will finally have real competition in GP U market segment.
Sickdog Posted September 28, 2018 Author Posted September 28, 2018 Great, thanks again all the suggestions, some great perspectives and good info here. Didn’t even think of the used 1080ti market. etherbattx Posted September 29, 2018 Posted September 29, 2018 buying used “last gen” gear is definitely the ticket. you can get 80% of current gen performance for less than half the cost.
