emenance Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 Been on this for awhile now after droping a tradition of norton antivirus corporate and other versions. NOD32 rocks and can even be found in the bittorrent world. Also you can try it out for 30 days and see you system get faster. Ven Posted June 24, 2007 Posted June 24, 2007 NOD32 is the best AV out there. Best AV is free AV. AVG is free and takes up less resource than most other antivirus I've used. So who creates these viruses? Some geeks who got nothing productive to create? Or does anyone else suspect it's those antivirus software companies themselves releasing many of these virus?

I am sure some of that is indeed going around :music_whistling: same as polititians (and all those who want to be in any kind of power) create bad things that makes them look good... there's been many stage-ups for these purposes... of course we only find out about them 40years later when they get caught... politics change... you know the drill :smilewink: No longer active in DCS...
LawnDart Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 Or does anyone else suspect it's those antivirus software companies themselves releasing many of these virus? That's what I've always thought in in the back of my mind... Pay some people under the table to create new viruses, so they can create the antitode. I'm sure many of these viruses are simply non-existant too... Who knows? :music_whistling: [sigpic]http://www.virtualthunderbirds.com/Signatures/sig_LD.jpg[/sigpic] Virtual Thunderbirds, LLC | Sponsored by Thrustmaster Corsair 750D Case | Corsair RM850i PSU | ASUS ROG MAXIMUS X CODE | 32GB Corsair DDR4 3200 | Intel i7-8086K | Corsair Hydro H100i v2 Cooler | EVGA GTX 1080 Ti FTW | Oculus Rift | X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty | Samsung SSD 970 EVO 1TB NVMe | Samsung SSD 850 EVO 1TB | WD Caviar Black 2 x 1TB | TM HOTAS Warthog | TM Pendular Rudder | TM MFD Cougar Pack | 40" LG 1080p LED | Win10 |
Ven Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 I wouldn't complain about viruses if the stupid AV softwares doesn't take so much resources. They are by far the most resource heavy "background" processes.
VMFA-Blaze Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 I've been using Windows Live Care and Windows Defender since I installed Vista and I'm finding it to be very impressive... And the reality of these products is that Microsoft doesn't need to create any Virus's to promote them ... I'm in complete agreement that anti virus company's do create a lot of these threats to sell their product.. I mean this scheme is so transparent even a "Cave Man Can See It".... But as far as Vista 64 (which I have on one of my systems) there's no Virus protection from MS that is compatible with 64 as of yet.. I have Stop Sign installed there but it's not recognised by MS.. I had called stop sign regarding this and was told that it's actually working, its just that MS hasn't signed off on the drivers yet...:music_whistling: But I've paid $45.00 this service and still have about 6 months left, so I'm leaving it in for now... I read somewhere that between Vista business and the 64 bit architecture that the virus risks for this system are partially non existent but its still a good idea to run something anyway, just to be on the safe side... So when Stop Sign expires I'm planning on just using Windows Defender for my 64 BIT system... ~S~ Blaze intel Cor i7-6700K ASUS ROG MAX VIII Extreme G.Skill TridentZ Series 32 GB Samsung 850 Pro 1TB SATA II ASUS GTX 1080/DIRECTX 12 Windows 10 PRO Thrustmaster Warthog Oculus Rift VR

Cosmonaut Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 Kaspersky is the best AV software and has near perfect scores in testing, I "was" using it and I have to say it worked great and I never dropped a frame while gaming. Now I've switched over to NOD32 and once again I'm impressed with how well protected you are with out any hit in performance. I would definitely recommend either Kaspersky or NOD32. Norton however is a POS for sure, I know a ton of people that have switched to Nod/Kasp and have found several bugs on their system that Norton didn't even know was there.. And it's pretty system hungry leaving you having to deal with irritating stutters while gaming. I don't know what it's doing because it scores so low compared to every other AV software that Norton is now seen as a sad joke. Cozmo. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Minimum effort, maximum satisfaction. VMFA-Blaze Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 Doesn't windows live require subscription? Yes but its free for three months, and that should just about bring me up to a renewal date.. I think I will get rid of norton on my current machine as weel because I think it doesnt provide the protection for the resorces it consumes. It uses 2 cores for scaning alone (50%+ LOAD!), thats because it uses more than one executable at a time. And theres something fishy with the way it installs on my system because it reserves part of the MBT for itself wich windows seems to not like it very much. .
rattler Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 Norton I don't bash Software but I have too say that Norton and Iolo System Mechanics are the worst I have ever seen. Norton does slow down the performance of your machine, that has been a well documented. If you use a credit card to renew, they use it 6 months before your subscription is out. I have proof of that as it happened to my brother and he kept all documents. Heard it has happened to a lot of people and most of the time you don't listen to some of this, but now I have proof that they do this. My brother found that it would change settings on some applications. His proof was, removed Norton and has had no further problems. I believe he is using Kasperskey now with no problems. My son did have some problems with NOD32 re outlook express. He uses Kasperskey now. Now that's not to say NOD32 is a problem, just he had a problem. NOD32 has won some impressive awards. From the info I have on NOD32 it likes to be the only virus software on your computer. Kasperskey is also similar in that regard. I would say on personal experience(my brother) and what I have read, symantec, norton and mcfee are the ones to stay away from. Once good but no more. My take.Cheers.

So if everything goes well with Windows Live, I'm most likely going to replace Stop Sign... They both cost about the same... ~S~ Blaze The thing about Windows Live Care One that was really causing me some concern was the constant reminder to back up my system... And I was getting this orange balloon with backup warnings... At first I tried to back up the system with CD's but I found that I would need a large amount of CD's to complete this task.. I then had a great idea "for a change " to use an external HD as I had 2 Maxtor 80 GIG HD's sitting around from an old build.. So I went to the MWave site (which by the way is one of my favorite suppliers) and purchase a 3.5 SATA compliant external HD enclosure for $25.00 USD... The thing that's so "cool" about this is you can use a SATA or USB connection to your PC.. So rather then fool around with the SATA RAID 0, I decided to connect up via USB... But since the drive was used before (and had data on it), I couldn't get get the system to see it ... So then I started to google this issues, and after a lot of reading, I finally realized that I would have to treat this drive the same way that I would in installing the complete operating system.. Mainly and simply put, I would have to reformat the disk.. So I finally found the right window to carry out the reformat, after several hours of trial and error and a lot of help from the Microsoft web sight ... I then successfully did the reformat and was able to assign a letter to the drive... After this accomplishment I then went back to Live One Care and selected the drive to use as the backup, and then did the back up... So now One Care is showing a green balloon and my system is running very stable and the Sata Raid setup has stopped thrashing about.... ~S~ Blaze intel Cor i7-6700K ASUS ROG MAX VIII Extreme G.Skill TridentZ Series 32 GB Samsung 850 Pro 1TB SATA II ASUS GTX 1080/DIRECTX 12 Windows 10 PRO Thrustmaster Warthog Oculus Rift VR
