graywo1fg Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 hey guys as you know in my other post in the tech forum. i just got a new computer and built it myself and i want to overclock my processor and i know it can easily be done to 3ghtz but.... my idling temperature is 40 degrees Celsius!!! but i heard from friends of mine that it should idle at 28 Degrees... but i have a huge aftermarket heatsink and fan... why is mine idleing at 40 and the thermal paste i have i just got and its this artic silver 5 thermal paste and its suposed to be really good but i'm so confused why its idling so high... or is this normal temp? Kuky Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Difference in temperature reading are due to using different software (or BIOS) to read them. I've found out best is to use "CoreTemp" as it reads temperatures from sensors on chip die itself. In general BIOS reading as well some other software show about 10°C less then what CoreTemp is showing. I have E6600 running at 3GHz 24/7 and my idle temperature is around 40°C too. When fully loaded (100% CPU usage on both cores - tested running "Orthos") temperatures are around 57°C to 60°C depending on room temperature. Mind you though just openning the side door on the case drops temperatures by about 4°C to 5°C. When running LockOn temperatures are around 50°C I think (I'll check today again to confirm and adjust this post where required) I had this E6600 running at 3.3GHz stable (even had it at 3.6GHz but it wasn't stable) but the temperatures were not to my liking. I had the CPU at full load going 60°C (with case open) and I didn't feel easy leaving this to run a such :music_whistling: Oh and... I use air cooling: ZALMAN CNPS9500AT EDIT: Alright I've checked temperatures tonight with CoreTemp and I get this (E6600 @ 3GHz): Idle = 41/42°C Running LockOn = 47/48°C What I've done is first ran and completed one Su-27 mission. The PC case was closed and temperature was up to 55°C. After landing I opened the PC case and temperature went down to 47/48°C (as above). So it's interesting to see such a temperature rise when PC case is closed. Obviously air flow is nowhere near as good as with case open. No longer active in DCS...
graywo1fg Posted June 28, 2007 Author Posted June 28, 2007 My Heatsink is a OCZ Vindicator... its so massive that the fan is hooked to the side and blowing twards the back of the case.... MY CO Washout says i can overclock it without increasing the voltage and if thats true would i be able to overclock it when its ideling at this temp? graywo1fg Posted June 28, 2007 Author Posted June 28, 2007 Really? thats what i needed to hear and i am ok with that. Very ok but i had no idea that you had to break something like that in... :P Voice of Jester AI Death From Above =DFA= Squadron Discord - https://discord.gg/deathfromabove http://www.twitch.tv/graywo1f https://www.youtube.com/user/Lonewo1fg
TorwaK Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 I use E6600 overloclocked to 3600 mhz without problem. CPU Temperature was 40-45C at winter time, btw we've summer here so it's increased to 50-55C  I've ZALMAN CNPS9700NT cpu cooler now, but I used TT Big Typhoon too. In my opinion Zalman is cooling better. 1 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Intel Core i7-6700K, @5GHz | Asus Maximus Hero VIII | 2 x eVGA GTX 970 SLI | Kingston Predator 16GB DDR4-3000Mhz | 2 x Samsung 850 PRO 240GB RAID-0 | AOC G2460PG G-SYNC LCD | OCULUS RIFT CV1 VR | THRUSTMASTER HOTAS WARTHOG | CH PRO PEDALS

EscCtrl Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Pff depends which temperatures you read, My 6600 is clocked to 3.2GHz and using CPU temp it reads 51єC and the Tjunction reads 82єC. I wouldn't worry about it topo much, as long as you aren't getting heat around 60єC idle then your fine I've heard.
Kuky Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 EscCtrl, can you post what CoreTemp reading you get? No longer active in DCS...
EscCtrl Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 This is the program I use and what it shows. All the programs seem to calculate different temperatures from what I hear, so tell me which program we will all use so we can compare effectively and I will get that.
EscCtrl Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/Core-Duo-Temperature-Guide-ftopict221745.html Useful guide ^ Ok it seems you should not listen to what I said in my earlier post about any temperatures being fine, whilst my computer runs great after some reading it seems it's 'dangerous'. Think I need to rethink how to cool it.
Ven Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Mine idles at 30~32' OEM heatsink and fan but I do have 250mm fan on the side of the case. I OC'ed to 2.62Ghz.
EscCtrl Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Wondering if I should apply some better quality thermal paste as opposed to the stock stuff that came with the fan I bought.
Ven Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Thermal paste doesn't make a big difference as long as you applied them properly. Quality of the paste might make +/- 1' difference maybe. Try adjusting ambient temperature and fan speed. Or back down on the OC. I've OC'ed like crazy in the past and I only do very conservative OC'ing. Even when the OC is stable and cool with liquid cooling, it still shortens the CPU lifespan.
graywo1fg Posted June 28, 2007 Author Posted June 28, 2007 i'm not overclocking at all... yet Voice of Jester AI Death From Above =DFA= Squadron Discord - https://discord.gg/deathfromabove http://www.twitch.tv/graywo1f https://www.youtube.com/user/Lonewo1fg
Kuky Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Like I said erlier, just opening PC case brings my E6600 temperture from 55°C to 47/48°C... that's a big difference if you ask me. According to that guide 55°C cis onsidered warm... uder 50°C is considered safe. And that's with o/c to 3GHz and air cooling. I changed the thermal paste few weeks back and used this silver base compound and in process of cleaning up I fine sanded (very gently) the CPU and Heatsink base surface. It did bring the CPU temperature 1-2°C down. Not much but it's usefull. No longer active in DCS...
dryden Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Hi I suppose we are all guessing here about what temperature is 'safe' and what software gives the most accurate readings. I don't have much to add to this discussion, but I'm sure you will find some of it useful. First of all, I use Intel's own Thermal Analysis Tool (TAT) to read temperatures. http://www.overclock.net/downloads/138139-intel-tat.html I hate noise and my whole PC case has just one 120mm fan, directed at a rather large copper CPU heatsink. My temperature readings are as follows: - 60 degrees celsius idling - 77 degrees celsius under load At some point I was playing with a briskly overclocked setting and noticed the computer slowing down considerably. TAT showed temperature as ">85 celsius" and the protection mechanism in the CPU had undeclocked it to 1000MHz. What have I learned from all this: 1. The most important determinant of temps is ambient room temperature - my computer is stuck in a closet 2. The second most important thing is your cooling solution 3. Polishing, brand name thermal paste etc amount to one or two degrees as mentioned above in this thread 4. 'High' temperatures do NOT immediately kill your CPU. Mine has been under the above mentioned temperatures for a whole year and it's still ticking away just fine. CPUs don't MELT, they're made out of silicon! 1 CPU: Intel E6600 @ 3,00 GHz GPU: NVIDIA GF7950GT MOBO: Asus P5B Deluxe WiFi/AP MEM: 2x512MB Kingston HyperX 800MHz DDR2
graywo1fg Posted July 1, 2007 Author Posted July 1, 2007 I loaded up the latest version of that core temp..... i guess the programs that came with the motherboard like Asus Probe and AI suite are using the wrong sensors because Core temp and speed fan both say that my core temp was 27C :D so overclocking to 3 ghtz i did and she runs beautifully  idling at 32C. im kind of amazed of how great it runns... did a stress test or a torture test with prime95 for 2 hours and no probs at all :D Voice of Jester AI Death From Above =DFA= Squadron Discord - https://discord.gg/deathfromabove http://www.twitch.tv/graywo1f https://www.youtube.com/user/Lonewo1fg
Prophet Posted July 1, 2007 Posted July 1, 2007 Wow, that is a crazy idle temp. I have 35C @ 1.325Vcore @ 3.4GHz. On water. Maybe I will look at lapping some day. Not sure about the E6600, but my E6400 does 3.2GHz on the stock heat sink.
graywo1fg Posted July 1, 2007 Author Posted July 1, 2007 i bet the E6600 can go higher on air but i'm good with 3ghts for now. ArmA runs beautifully with that and my Radeon 2900 Voice of Jester AI Death From Above =DFA= Squadron Discord - https://discord.gg/deathfromabove http://www.twitch.tv/graywo1f https://www.youtube.com/user/Lonewo1fg
Prophet Posted July 1, 2007 Posted July 1, 2007 Ahh we got similar systems then, I have the 2900 also. I was having lots of issues with ArmA, had to run at minimum settings. There was a ArmA hotfix and then Cat 7.6, and I can run with most everything on high, its awsome.
ViperVJG73 Posted July 1, 2007 Posted July 1, 2007 My DELL XPS 700 has a specs cooling-system for the CPU! The idle temps are 25°C core one and two Running Lock On core one has 32°C and core two 35°C Lock On runs at core two. No OC! I can run ArmA on Normal settings... and have found FSAA makes the bigest hit. and shit... I still can't find anyone to be full tank crew in ArmA... and play online as a team... comms and all... no one seems interested? Such a bugger that for every game I find I like to try I have to find different group of people to play with... No longer active in DCS...
graywo1fg Posted July 2, 2007 Author Posted July 2, 2007 Hey Kuky we play arma all the time (more than lockon untill BS comes out ;) ) pm me and i'll give your our vents info if you want someone to play with. and anyone else in your squad :D Voice of Jester AI Death From Above =DFA= Squadron Discord - https://discord.gg/deathfromabove http://www.twitch.tv/graywo1f https://www.youtube.com/user/Lonewo1fg
Prophet Posted July 2, 2007 Posted July 2, 2007 The ArmA hotfix was for 2900XT cards. And even with this card I run FSAA on disabled. And Kuky, I play ArmA when LOMAC pisses me off or no one is on. So hit me up too.
