Aluminum Donkey Posted December 27, 2018 Posted December 27, 2018 Better to go with a TV or monitor? TV sets are often big, 4K, and cheap. TVs, unfortunately, usually only have HDMI inputs and will only display higher resolutions at 30 FPS. A computer monitor will display it's native resolution at 60 FPS and sometimes higher, but 60 FPS is excellent. So, for a good gaming experience, a computer monitor it is--unless, of course, you can find a TV that will allow high resolution at high framerates, and also has the inputs to allow it (DisplayPort). webweaver40 Posted December 28, 2018 Posted December 28, 2018 No problem to run 4k 60fps on a big screen with hdmi 2.0, which most newer TVs have. I have a 34" 1440p 100hz monitor and choose to play dcs on my 55" 4k tv. Looks beautiful and I can spot so much better. You do have to get the right tv with good motion handling and low input lag. I went with the one highly recommended by rtings.com . The Vizio p series. Bought at best buy for $650 Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk
3WA Posted December 28, 2018 Posted December 28, 2018 As Donkey said, TV's are cheap. Always go with a monitor if you can. @Webweaver - Nice! Hopefully TV's are getting better.
bandit648 Posted December 28, 2018 Posted December 28, 2018 (edited) I tried a variety of 4k TV's before settling on the LG 32GK850G-B gaming monitor. The two main things to consider with TV vs monitor is resolution and VRR (variable refresh rate) technology. Any TV you buy today is going to be native 4k resolution and hard to find with VRR. To get 4k to run at a smooth 60 fps is a chore even for a GTX 1080 TI. I personally crave smoothness in my flight sims so I went with a 32 inch 1440p 144hz G-sync monitor. You can maintain higher fps easier at 1440p then you can at 4k. VRR (freesync or G-sync) comes in when your fps dips below your monitor's refresh rate. It makes the stuttering much less noticeable then v-sync. The other thing I like about the LG monitor I have is that it has a VA panel instead of IPS. The VA panel produces much better blacks and therefore is much nicer for night flying. If you're going the TV route check out the 2018 Samsung lineup. They have freesync and some even can run at 1440p @ 120hz. Keep in mind that freesync only works with AMD video cards and G-sync with Nvidia. No TV's have G-sync... yet. webweaver40 Posted December 28, 2018 Posted December 28, 2018 One thing I forgot to mention was that I am running a 2080ti card which is able to easily handle my 4k tv. If your hardware does not enable you to run a tv at 4k 60 fps, then obviously a gsync monitor is the way to go. You may get a better answer if you provide some details of your computer hardware. Sn8ke_iis Posted December 28, 2018 Posted December 28, 2018 My "TV" does 120Hz at 1440p and 60Hz at 4k. By far a better experience than a small display. It's not even in the same ballpark. I only use a 27" display for testing and first person shooters. Once you get used to a big screen you never go back. Just be sure to check rtings.com for a model with a decent gaming/PC mode and that can display full 4:4:4 Chroma. HDR doesn't matter for DCS but is awesome when playing console ports and living room/couch gaming. In terms of cost for performance Big screens by SAMSUNG/LG/TCL/VISIO are way ahead of their desktop counterparts. You get the benefit of economies of scales whereas gaming monitors are a very niche market. DCS cockpits are absolutely gorgeous on a 4K big screen. You don't know what you're missing. Crank up the view distance and you can spot dots way off in the distance. If you have to lock your framerate at 60 for TrackIR you might as well be playing in 4K anyway. Gsync only mitigates stutters so much in between 60-120 if you are using TrackIR. It prefers an even 60 fps or 120+ otherwise microstutters are visible even with Gsync. I think I'll be able to sustain 120+ on my 2080 Ti's but I haven't tested them yet. I'll let you guys know.

bandit648 Posted December 29, 2018 Posted December 29, 2018 I run DCS on a 8700k/1080TI/32gb rig and I'd love to see some benchmark tests in DCS from someone with a 2080TI and a 1080TI. Right now I'm not seeing the value in upgrading to the 2080TI. I might even skip this generation unless prices come back down to earth. Headwarp Posted December 30, 2018 Posted December 30, 2018 (edited) There's a video of a guy flying low over caucausus getting about 55 fps minimum flying low@ 4k with his 2080Ti. @3440x1440 I get like 80-120 fps in the hornet over persian gulf. I upgraded from a 980Ti though. If I had a 1080Ti I probably would've skipped this gen. I'd personally never buy two generations in a row. I'd probably not have bothered upgrading from my gtx 680 4GB til pascal or now if not for the switch to ultra wide years back and the 980Ti being the most powerful offering at the time.
