The recent F14 video made me think about potential functionality for the navigator (number 2) position that we'll have in the Mosquito.

I'm assuming that a real player will be able to take the position, but if we don't have a real person to hand, here's a few thoughts that I'd like to put forward to hopefully inspire what we'll finally be given.

I'm conscious that WW2 navigation early war was done by dead reckoning at night and visual identification of obvious landmarks in good visibility. Based on that, I'd like the following to be optional:

- To have our navigator provide direction and distance to waypoints. The options for this to include by variable time (e.g. every 5 mins), prior to or at waypoints

- To be able to define waypoints "in game", as per the Viggen

- For there to be a definitive list of "recordings", that we as users can replace, thus giving players the option to easily change them to other languages, dialects etc

- To be able to set the skill level of the navigator and for that to affect his directions, e.g. "precise" means that he'll always be perfect with navigation (not realistic, but some players might want this), then for other levels (e.g. good) to have a variable level of accuracy, also influenced by weather, lighting etc. I've read stories of Blenheim pilots bombing air bases in the UK, whilst trying to hit targets in France at night, so it's appropriate that our Navigator may sometimes be way out.

- For out navigator to provide warnings, e.g. "enemy on our six", "pull up" etc

- Some controls in the aircraft are likely to be used by him, e.g. the landing gear. So when we click to put down our gear, might be good for him to say, "wilco, gear down".

There was also a fair bit of radio navigation going on back then as well. I wish that ED would think about incorporating some of that in the future.

Early war had limited rnav . On the other hand , they did use a lot of astral nav . Navigator volunteers would have to learn how to use a sextant :)

Just an ADF in the cockpit would be a huge improvement over what we have now, which is bupkis!

Yeah , they did have RDF early in the war . I'm trying to recall the name of that system , used by both civvies and military , wherein one listened for differing morse code signals to "ride the beam" . Guess all that Ernie Gann reading didn't stick :(

You are trying to recall the "A and N Range" navigation system. There was also Hay Rake which was used by the US Navy and USAAF. The Hay Rake system wouldn't even need any new instrument in the cockpit, just a radio receiver tuned to the proper frequency.

+1 I'm looking forward to the wooden wonder so much.

IIRC only mosquitoes of 105 and 109 squadrons of the Pathfinder Force used Oboe, and they flew Mosquito B IV's, B IX's and B XVI's (and the B XVI's were equipped with H2S IIRC).

This means that FB VI's must never have flown operationally with Oboe, which is a shame since it would've been, interesting to say the least, to try and use it.

However, some of 100 Group's FB VI's were fitted with Rebecca which was a direction finder that used a ground transmitter to guide a group on target. That's something to add to the navigator's functionality? :joystick:
