Darcwaynard Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 While flying the Strike Fighter instant action mission a friendly AI hornet fired an AB on a Mig-21. The mig was being chased by another hornet. The missle clearly tracks the Mig until about 10k feet away where it presumably notches the missile. The missile then starts tracking the hornet in trail and destroys it. I guess after she goes pitbull and loses its primary target it will track anything? Also curious if once iff is finished this will be a non issue. Not sure if this is normal behaviour for the 120B or not. Apologies if this has been covered already. No track available but I can upload the tacview once I'm at my desk. Tholozor Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 Even with IFF it could still happen, the missile has no idea what it's looking at once it goes pitbull, just that it's looking at something (no on-board IFF). Which is why you usually don't want to fire Fox 3s into a furball without clear separation between friendlies and bandits (can't say much for the AI though). Sent from my LG-H812 using Tapatalk Nope That is correct behavior (there might be a classified thing that prevents it). But I've seen this many times in the sim world. So another plane is near or chaff then missile will track. So SA is very important and that is why real pilots brief 6 hours for a 2 hour flight :) But why can't the pilot "kill" the missile ? . All ties are cut and missile is now on it's own. And ask any online pilot, they have seen team kills maaany times ;) OS: Win10 home 64bit*MB: Asus Strix Z270F/ CPU: Intel I7 7700k /Ram:32gb_ddr4 GFX: Nvidia Asus 1080 8Gb Mon: Asus vg2448qe 24" Disk: SSD Stick: TM Warthog #1400/Saitek pro pedals/TIR5/TM MFDs [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Also not to be too picky by why are they even carrying AIM120 to begin with? Mission takes place January 1991 and the 120 didnt enter service til September 1991. Come on guys lets step up the authenticity! ;) Also my daft wingmen wouldn't be blowing each other up with AIM 7's.... Right? Banzaiib Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 They call it "mad dog" for a reason... when it goes active, it's like a dog looking for a squirrel, the first thing it sees, it chases.

Banzaiib Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 Maddog and pitbull are two different things the behavior you're describing happens in visual mode you are technically correct, which is the best kind of correct :)
Deano87 Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 This is one of the only good reasons to carry a Sparrow, in case you need fire a missile into a furball and be absolutely sure what you're going to hit. Sarge55 Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 I'm thinking it's never a good idea to fire a missile into a furball. Better to provide SA to the engaged aircraft and/or close in for guns.
