Try these settings for clear (not blurry) VR! Nvidia users

I tweaked my Nvidia control panel settings and now my Vive is super clear compared to normal. It's a night and day difference. Very good for spotting.

Nvidia Control Panel-Manage 3d settings-program settings add program and browse to your dcs app.

Anisotropic filtering - App Controlled

(MFAA) - On

Power Management - Max Performance

Preferred refresh rate - Highest Available

shader cache - on

texture filtering Anisotropic sample optimization - off

texture filtering Negative LOD bias- Clamp

texture filtering quality - High Quality (Not Max Performance)

texture filtering trilinear optimization - on

threaded optimization - Auto

triple buffering - off

vertical sync - off

virtual reality pre-rendered frames - use 3d application setting

I also use the Completely remove useless clutter mod from https://throughtheinferno.com/mods/

In addition, I noticed if these were off it was not good.

In game:

MSAA 2x

Anisotropic filtering 4x

cockpit displays set to 1024

VR pixel density 1.5 to 1.8 depending on fps

chimney smoke 0 - this is a frame killer for me

textures high

terrain textures high

civ traffic low

water high

visib range high

heat blur low

shadows low

depth of field off

lens effects none

motion blur off

ssaa off

clutter grass o

trees 50%

preload 150000

gamma 2.2

terrain object shadows default

cockpit global illumination on

Not sure but the file says treesVisibility = -15008;

The trees are still visible. I'm not sure if does anything useful.

Ok, I tried this and I get a very good clarity on Odyssey+ and I also get very decent stable frames. I had a slight lag with tracking I think, it is much smoother now. Also the milky windows on Mi-8 are significantly less milky.

I added them to the original post. It is going to be hard to pull it off with a 970 though. It doesn't have enough vram.

Can I ask why you use MSAA with PD 1.5+? Normally it's not worth mixing AA and PD, they do the same job.

Technically correct, however in practice I have found that without MSAA I get a lot of terrain shimmering. This all but disappears when I use 2XMSAA. Setting PD at 1.5 with 2XMSAA is the happy medium I have found for sharpening up the image and eliminating shimmer whilst still maintaining 45 fps the majority of the time.

Also are these settings tuned for better spotting of enemy contacts, or just for the game looking pretty?

I believe MSAA x2 is less fps costly than turning up the PD to match the results of MSAA x2. Look at a fence near the runways with and without MSAA. The settings are tuned for a sharper image resulting in both better spotting and a clearer game for me.

These settings have improved my clarity in cockpit, but I'm down to about 10FPS in Free Flight. I have an i9 7980XE with 64GB RAM and a 1080Ti.

I know I have to be overlooking something ... ??

Have you tried this? https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=231876

Do you run on an SSD?

1080ti fans on 100%?

Does your CPU throttle back when it hits 100%?

They don't really do the same job. I mean, they kind of do, in the sense that both methods mitigate aliasing, but the results are very different.

In DCS VR, higher pixel density will give you a clearer image, but you have to go very high in order for the effect to have a significant impact on aliasing. Even maxing it out to 2.5 will not get rid of shimmering and pixelation very well. The performance impact of PD at 2.5 is extreme.

That's why most people find a balance between MSAA and PD for optimum image clarity and fewest jaggies.

I've read so many contradictory experiences now with regards to VR settings I don't know what to think anymore.

I tried 2x MSAA on top of 1.5 PD and yes, the clarity goes up. I also lose between 10 and 15 FPS so maybe it isn't worth it. And spotting is worse. Initially I thought it was a lot worse, I felt like I lost half my spotting range, but actually it's not that bad. Still, dots of enemy planes are not as sharp.

I'll keep it for now and play a bit more see if I like it.

If it is smooth (stutter free) just turn that fps counter off.

I take your point and to an extent it doesn't matter as long as I'm over 45 and can't hit 90 anyway (which might change soon). But it does make spotting worse, which is not as easy to handwave away.

Sometimes lowering the Gamma can help with spotting. High Gamma can wash things out.

Yup, I kept then MSAA and it's OK. I think my previous test was unfair because my targets were Fulcrums (small) that were also firing at me and being obscured by their own missile smoke. Against a Flanker guns only I can see him fine at 10 miles, and in a dogfigt I could keep track. Fulcrums head on I can see at 6 miles.

Hello, I have tried PD 1.5 and it turns unbearable to play. I run DCS (not the STEAM license)  on a PC with  i7 10700k 32 Gb RAM DDR4 3200, RTX 2080 super, SSD. I am using Oculus Q2, with Oculus Debug Tool and the standard Oculus settings, but I have had to settle on DCS's PD 1.0 Anything over this value kills the VR experience.
By the way, these results are for the 2.7.8 version of the game.

Cheers
