Think of the RWR as a 360 degree top down view of a "map".

Exaample if it say 29 and the 29 is located at your 2 o'clock then there is an enemy mig 29 in that direction.

When the mig29 fires a radar missiles you will see a long line on the RWR from the mig 29 pointing towards the center of the RWR.

At the same time you hear a fast beeping sound.

Now instant turn example example 90 degree left and drop chaff now and then.

What happen is the missile that was fired now see you move away and it have to correct the flight path to intercept you. When the missile are forced to turn and cannot just fly in a direct line then it will use more energy and thereby loose its speed faster and have reduced range..

The RWR radar warning will however NOT inform you about anything if the mig29 is close enough that it can fire its heat seeking missiles.

I will imagine in future updates the horner will be able to warn you but im not 100% sure.. just saying the rear of the plane i imagine have the ability to detect a strong heat source that "appear" and warn you about it.

But its a guess from me.

The other problem is I don’t even know where the mig is at close range. I’m looking at radar but don’t see anything because it has gotten behind me.

If you have your EW HUD turned on, in some cases, you will know if the Mig is behind you...seen in the HUD.

there isn't a way nor will there ever be to warn you about IR missiles minus visually looking for the plume when they come off the rail. I hate them so much. Don't lose tally on your bogey, "lose sight lose the fight." If you know he's back there you better be looking or you go boom boom. Usually once I merge "if I can even get that far into the fight" I throw the radar out the window and it's strictly visual from that point until one of us are dead. I simply couldn't dogfight until I got TrackIR it made ALL the difference.

Not in the F/A-18C but the Mirage 2000 certainly has such a system (even if in reality it was rarely fitted to the C variant). It relies on detecting a missile launch (no matter the target) rather than the lock (so friendly missiles being fired at your opponent will set it off).

To be honest situation awareness is key and yes TrackIR makes all the difference (or for a cheapskate like me a modded PS3Eye camera, IR LEDs and alternative tracking software).

Same with the A-10C.

DCS Panavia Tornado (IDS) really needs to be a thing!
