Elnocho3 Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 I have been playing lomac on and off since the first demo (love at first sight) but the game now crashes to desktop every time i play a mission with any degree of complexity and sometimes randomly. This was a problem in windows xp but now vista is even worse (not saying that has anything to do with it just stating the facts) with it frequently crashing EVERYTIME i play the game now. I love Lomac and will support ED for producing such a top notch game, but this is really pissing me off now and spoiling any enjoyment i used to get from the game. This is a sample error log created in the temp folder of the game: DXDefTexture: failed to load f15_damage2.bmp, D3DXERR_INVALIDDATA. DXDefTexture: failed to load common.psd, D3DXERR_INVALIDDATA. DXDefTexture: failed to load samara-red.bmp, D3DXERR_INVALIDDATA. DXDefTexture: failed to load samara-blue.bmp, D3DXERR_INVALIDDATA. DXDefTexture: failed to load samara-cherry.bmp, D3DXERR_INVALIDDATA. DXDefTexture: failed to load TRAVA-2.TGA, D3DXERR_INVALIDDATA. FlareTrailMaterial: failed to create either pixel or vertex shader, E_FAIL. FlareTrailMaterial: failed to create either pixel or vertex shader, E_FAIL. FlareTrailMaterial: failed to create either pixel or vertex shader, E_FAIL. This repeats over and over and over! The D3DXERR_INVALIDDATA and E_FAIL are in almost every error report after crashing to desktop. SuperKungFu Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 strange, it looks like its not loading the textures. So doing a clean reinstall didn't work? And which version of lock on are you running? Plus, tell us your installation process. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Elnocho3 Posted August 15, 2007 Author Posted August 15, 2007 :) Thanks for your reply much appreciated, Running Flaming Cliffs version 1.12b, (the Lock On Gold UK boxed version) I have tried a clean reinstall using the following steps: 1) Install Lockon 2) Install Flaming Cliffs as a stand alone version 3) Install Flaming Cliffs v1.12b as a standalone. Then tried playing still crashes to desktop appearingly randomly but frequently. I have installed some add ons using modman since, like Walmis F-15 model which is fantastic, flare and explosion FPS tweaks, Overcast Cloud mod, Cloud mod, Visibilinty range for medium visibility by TekaTeka mod. I am also interested to know how long your and other peoples games run before crashing because i thought this was a common fault?? Is formatting and setting up a partition for Windows XP just to play Lomac on worth it or should it work with my system specs and drivers?? PC spec: i9 9900KS @ 5.1ghz, 32GB RAM, 2 TB NVME M2, RTX 3090 Peripherals: TM Warthog, Saitek Pro Flight Pedals, Rift S, Custom UFC
SuperKungFu Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 Actually i never had this problem, nor have i seen it on this forum, so i don't believe it is a common fault. If i were to give a rough guess, it might be due to walmis F-15. Because above you stated there was an error loading of a bmp file for the F-15 damage skin. And quite a lot of people now play Lock On on vista. I don't however since i want to avoid some problems like modman not working and such, but it is indeed possible. But since you HD is partitioned anyway, mind as well play it on XP. If you don't mind doing this: i would reinstall Lock On. Install 1.00 original, 1.1 FC on top of that, and 1.12a (notice how i said a rather than b since b was suppose to fix some things for vista- but since you are on XP, based on some of the reading, i would prefer installing the a version). Anyway, after that, don't install any mods (just yet) and play around. See if you get any more crashes. Also, upgrading or downgrading to a different graphics driver might also help. Best of luck to you! [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
tflash Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 I must say that I had problems with installing FC 1.1 as a stand-alone. It gave random errors. The only thing that works for me is (using Lockon Gold distribution) 1) install Lockon 1.01 2) install FC 1.1 OVER 1.01 as an add-on 3) patching to FC 1.12b [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Elnocho3 Posted August 15, 2007 Author Posted August 15, 2007 Thanks for your replies, I am very envious of you guys who don't have crash to desktop problems!!! I am running windows vista ultimate at the mo with a partition for my work files. Will try installing lockon onto that partition in the order you suggested. If that fails then should a reformat and dual boot partition (one partition of vista ultimate for work and all other games, one partition for xp and lockon only) fix the problem??? PC spec: i9 9900KS @ 5.1ghz, 32GB RAM, 2 TB NVME M2, RTX 3090 Peripherals: TM Warthog, Saitek Pro Flight Pedals, Rift S, Custom UFC
SuperKungFu Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 not really, lock on will work with vista. I think the main thing that threw me off was when you said you installed FC as a standalone and the patch as a standalone. I'm not sure if that meant the same thing as installing on top of Lock On. Because FC is an addon to the original Lock On. Hope you can clear that up for me. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
thereminqblank Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 There is another download for 1.12b available that claims it's for the US version of Lock On Gold. Even though I own a UK copy, I downloaded this patch and ran it, and everything works fine. It doesn't ask if you want a standalone version of 1.12b though "Unholy Roller" [sIGPIC]http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/images/userbars/A-10C_UserBar_01.gif[/sIGPIC]

Thanks for your percevierance, Will do my best to clear it up: I have two partitions C: with Vista and the various versions of lomac on it, and D: with only work files on it. When i installed fresh to my C: 1st installed Lockon original (the first cd from the lockon gold box) 2nd installed Lockon Flaming Cliffs as a standalone (2nd cd from box) 3rd installed Lockon Flaming Cliffs V1.12b patch over the previous version. Hope that makes it clearer for you guys. Am going to first try new video drivers, then try fresh installing it the exact way you describe - but which partition would you recommend installing it on?? SuperKungFu Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 Install it on your c drive, and since its vista, here's some tips Lock On does run well on Vista and those wanting to upgrade, can do it with ease and run Lock On as before, but will need to accept some serious problems with 3rd party software such as Modman, which does not work under Vista neither in its 5 nor in 6 Beta13 versions, SAITEK owners now have a new SST SOFTWARE BETA FOR VISTA , but it won’t be able to run old profiles until a migration tool is made available. Eagle Dynamics has released a patch 1.12b meant to provide compatibility with VISTA as 1.12a does not run under VISTA . Even so you will still need to get a driver update from STARFORCE, as sooner than later the Starforce driver will be disabled by Vista due to incompatibility. I did NOT encounter any issues with Starforce, I installed it on a new laptop, which came with VISTA Business 32 pre-installed. There may be issues with Sound and GPU drivers that need to be addressed. - A quick Install Guide If you had a fully working FC 1.12a copy – and want to upgrade to Vista, in view of Modman inability to install any mods, keep your old copy of Lock On 1.1 by renaming it, then you can later copy the BAZAR, ME, CONFIG and SOUNDS folders and paste it in your new install, this will allow you to have all the Mods without having to go through a manual install for each mod. Installing FC on Vista requires a clean 1.00 install and then over it the 1.1 FC install. After doing this and BEFORE you continue, load FC for the first time for Starforce to try (it won’t) to register your copy, now you should update it first with the 1.12b PATCH and then do the STARFORCE DRIVER UPDATE and you are ready to go – load FC again and Starforce will run and enable your copy. Remember to use an utility called Savekeys found at ED site to avoid having to register again and that you need to have admin privileges to edit files etc. If you installed VISTA, share with us your experience in our FORUMS : we will weep and rejoice with you. 1 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Elnocho3 Posted August 15, 2007 Author Posted August 15, 2007 Update on the situation: Installed new video drivers saw some fps increases so good BUT still the frickin crashes. **SO** 1) Unistalled all versions of lomac from my computer. Restarted 2) Installed Lomac (from cd 1 of the UK lock on gold box), did not try running it. 3) Installed FC (from cd 2 of the UK lock on gold box), 4) Tried to load the game up get error dialog box unable to locate component. It says the AFMBASE.DLL was not found. 5) Tried to ignore this problem (thought it may be to do with the vista operating system) and tried to install the patch LO_Flaming_Cliffs_Patch_1.12b_EngCD found at lockonfiles.com. The following error message is displayed: Error occurred during installation. Error code is 2. Setup is not completed. And thats the end of that! So not even a crashing to desktop version of Lomac on my computer anymore!!! Any thoughts??? As my computer really is more stable than these messages are leading you to believe. Looking back i just worked around this somehow when i installed last time on vista which may have hidden the later crash to desktop problems. All in all very pissed at how this games seems to work great for all you guys and not for me! SuperKungFu Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 You mentioned you did not try running after you installed the first cd, i highly recommend you test each step so we can limit down what's the problem. Do a complete clean reinstall, make sure no reg file of lock on exist. Then starts from the bottom 1.00 original lock on, test and fly- see if it crashes. If it doesn't, proceed to 1.1 FC. My guess now is that its an error with the patch. Your downloaded if from lockonfiles and got a error code 2- which ndicates of a wrong patch that you have attempted to install. Try downloading the one from this site http://www.virtual-jabog32.de/index.php?section=downloads&subcat=17&lang=en And see how it turns out. Btw, you do know that for vista, you have to run the game in adminstrative mode right? That's something you might want to search up on. Sorry i can't give any info about that since i don't run lock on on vista so I wouldn't know. Also, do a search about these problems. You mentioned error code 2 so i did a search and found someone had a similar issue and it worked out for them http://forum.lockon.ru/showthread.php?t=22138&highlight=Error+code+2 Best of luck. SuperKungFu Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 Oh, and make sure you download the correct patch for your lock on (cd version) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Prophet Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 Do a clean install. Choose to run the installer as Administrator, both CD's. Patch the game, run choosing to run as Administrator. Run the game, choose to run as administrator. Do not install any add-ons. See if you still have the problem. The biggest thing, is it seems installing anything that is going to access a USB device, TrackIR, CH, Cougar, LOMAC, most games, most programs... hell it seems everything... needs to be run as Admin in Vista. Just an FYI, I run 1.12a in Vista without any issues. I use 1.12a because 1.12b wasnt out yet, and I just installed the SF updated drivers for Vista. And since its working no need to reinstall.
Elnocho3 Posted August 17, 2007 Author Posted August 17, 2007 Update Hello guys thanks for your continued help  I have now done a clean install with the steps you gents posted in this thread and the game now is installed so thanks for the advice. BUT The crash to desktops are back again!! I have not installed ANY mods or tweaks totally fresh, clean install. The crashes do not occurr in simple missions but mainly campaigns and crimean air wars type missions. By this point in my younger days the computer would be out of the window ... falling to the floor .... landing in a nice mess of circuit boards and wires  Anyway back on to the point heres a sample of the error log: DXDefTexture: failed to load SU-17-OKRAS.bmp, D3DXERR_INVALIDDATA. DXDefTexture: failed to load samara-red.bmp, D3DXERR_INVALIDDATA. DXDefTexture: failed to load samara-blue.bmp, D3DXERR_INVALIDDATA. Wondering if this thread might have anything to do with the problems i am having: http://forum.lockon.ru/showthread.php?t=9459 Any advice would be great, but i am seriously thinking about formatting my second partition and just installing windows xp and lomac on it. SuperKungFu Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 strange that it keeps saying its failing to load these textures. Have you tried updating your graphics driver along with updating your directx? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Elnocho3 Posted August 22, 2007 Author Posted August 22, 2007 Problem Resolved Had enough messing about in vista tring to get it to work I now have a duel boot system with xp on a seperate hard drive. It works perfectly again in xp - but funnily enough looked in the error log and found the same textures are failing to load as in vista but the game works fine. FINALLY can concentrate on flying again :) Thanks for our your attempts at solving my problem PC spec: i9 9900KS @ 5.1ghz, 32GB RAM, 2 TB NVME M2, RTX 3090 Peripherals: TM Warthog, Saitek Pro Flight Pedals, Rift S, Custom UFC
Psycho_909nl Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 The biggest thing, is it seems installing anything that is going to access a USB device, TrackIR, CH, Cougar, LOMAC, most games, most programs... hell it seems everything... needs to be run as Admin in Vista. So, just what's the BIG difference with XP except that there is a security leak becuase IE and outlook alike stuff are running in priviledged mode too and can easily infect the whole os? and if youre using the os correctly you just have to get anoyed while installing soft/hardware and playing lockon but that ED's problem for using priviledged function. Still have the same problem as Elnocho3 and would like a good idea on how to sovle it.
Prophet Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 Well I run Vista and have yet to have a single issue. How is its ED's fault when Vista wasnt out when the game was released? Sure IE and Outlook could cause harm, but only if you are a baffoon that opens attachments in an e-mail that say openme.exe....
Psycho_909nl Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 Well I run Vista and have yet to have a single issue. How is its ED's fault when Vista wasnt out when the game was released? Where did i say it was there fault, it's is however a design error that most companys made pre windows XP how. so how is it microsoft's error that ed decided to use those privileged function calls?? Sure IE and Outlook could cause harm, but only if you are a baffoon that opens attachments in an e-mail that say openme.exe.... And unfortunately for microsoft that means 70% of their userbase ;) ;) btw it 's openme.jpg.exe. And i'm also running vista on all systems with just a few thing that won't run most of wich are built for win 98 so i just have to live with that. edit: just for the other people that have this problem with vista here is my solution. I Just tried uninstalling 1.12B and installed 1.12A with http://www.star-force.com/support/sfdrvup.zip and the crashes are gone.
