DoctorStrop Posted April 1, 2019 Posted April 1, 2019 Hi all, I want to set up a dedicated server for myself and about 6 other players. My wife has a desktop PC with Xeon CPU (W3520 @2.66GHz), with 8GB ram and a nVidia GT 710. She never turns it off, and only uses it for online solitaire and Netflix, so I was thinking if I got her another drive, would it be possible to run a stealth server, or at the least something she would not notice, nor accidentally shut down? Would there be much of a slow down on web browsing for her? Finally, would I get away with a spin drive, seeing as DCS will not be rendering the 3D environment? Thanks in advance Windows 10 64bit, Intel i7 6700K, 32GB Corsair 2400Mhz, 970 NVMe 500Gb SSD, GeForce 2080 super, HP Reverb, VKB GF PRO, Thrustmaster Warthog throttle, Thrustmaster Pendular rudders, Windows + DCS  My youtube channel

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I3570K @ 4.5Ghz, 16Gb DDR3 @ 1600, GTX770 @1080p It's just best this way, if it is not stealth she WILL accidentally close the server 100% guaranteed. Actually I see she has Win 10 pro, so I can run as a different user, so my question now is just can I get away with a normal 7200RPM HDD. Yes, I use a much weaker pc and works perfectly. Would there be much of a slow down on web browsing for her? I doubt it. Finally, would I get away with a spin drive, seeing as DCS will not be rendering the 3D environment? Yes, but for my server I spent 50 bucks on a 240 gb ssd to have a faster startup and mission loading ... any map that you buy for the server would cost more than that, so it wasnt irreasonable to spend that on the drive. I created on ED a second account, to keep the purchases for my server separate from the ones of my gaming rig. You dont need aircrafts, just the maps ... and the ww2 assets pack if you like that period. For work: iMac mid-2010 of 27" - Core i7 870 - 6 GB DDR3 1333 MHz - ATI HD5670 - SSD 256 GB - HDD 2 TB - macOS High Sierra For Gaming: 34" Monitor - Ryzen 3600 - 32 GB DDR4 2400 - nVidia RTX2080 - SSD 1.25 TB - HDD 10 TB - Win10 Pro - TM HOTAS Cougar Mobile: iPad Pro 12.9" of 256 GB

I assume you have your machines on the same router, did you need to do anything special with regards to forwarding? Rudel_chw Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 I assume you have your machines on the same router, did you need to do anything special with regards to forwarding? Yes .. I setup a DHCP reserve so that the Server would always have the same internal IP, say 192.168.1.199 Then I forwarded the port 10309 and 8089 to my server. The port 10308 is forwarded to my Gaming Rig, so I can keep multiplaying as usual. I also implemented a Teamspeak server on the same PC and intend to add a Simple radio server as well. DoctorStrop Posted April 3, 2019 Author Posted April 3, 2019 Feed back: I have it all working. I could only muster up 3 others to test this evening, so we had a F-14 pilot/RIO, an FA-18 and a AV-8B, there was no major problems with latency, the odd spike. A2A, laser bombing, buddy lase, A2A refueling, formation flying, carrier landings, it all just worked, and it works fine on a crappy old 240 velociraptor 10000RPM. The main thing is my wife did not complain of any slow down in performance while using her PC as she normally does. This being said, I need to give it a mission which will be more stressful on her hardware, and get a few more players on. I have one more thing to complete this setup; I have set up network sharing, but I am going to make a new link for the save games folder so it stores on the second dedicated drive that I installed for this, that way I don't use any of her 120GB SSD, and I can clear trk files and add missions which can be manipulated using the account page on the ED website. I made a network share with the Server's Saved Games folder, so I can easily alter the settings or transfer missions, all from within my gaming rig .. it looks like this: :) For work: iMac mid-2010 of 27" - Core i7 870 - 6 GB DDR3 1333 MHz - ATI HD5670 - SSD 256 GB - HDD 2 TB - macOS High Sierra For Gaming: 34" Monitor - Ryzen 3600 - 32 GB DDR4 2400 - nVidia RTX2080 - SSD 1.25 TB - HDD 10 TB - Win10 Pro - TM HOTAS Cougar Mobile: iPad Pro 12.9" of 256 GB
Mr_sukebe Posted April 4, 2019 Posted April 4, 2019 OP> Nice one. Did you get a nice increase to your frame rate on the pc you were playing with? I usually do. 7800x3d, 5080, 64GB, PCIE5 SSD - Oculus Pro - Moza (AB9), Virpil (Alpha, CM3, CM1 and CM2), WW (TOP and CP), TM (MFDs, Pendular Rudder), Tek Creations (F18 panel), Total Controls (Apache MFD), Jetseat

This means nothing gets stored on C:\ except probably something in Application data. I wasn't able to run a server on my machine prior to this, so sadly no frame increase.
