WelshZeCorgi Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 What's *your* or the Navy's policy/tactics on dogfighting with PH missiles? Is it better to lob all of them from afar to clean up the aircraft or save 1 or 2 for dogfighting?
probad Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 (edited) if you have phoenixes, you better not get into a knifefight if you get into a knifefight, you better not have any phoenixes even palletized drag index is worse than externals no idea what kind of capability you think the phoenix offers in close, but if you are greedy and think "oh maybe i will shoot someone 60 miles away after this dogfight" you are setting yourself up to fail greed will get you killed every time Edited May 3, 2019 by probad
Lucas_From_Hell Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 They are remarkably useful when active off the rail in boresight mode, allowing you essentially to lob a live fire-and-forget grenade into a fight from a respectable while working on other problems. For example, if you're busy with one bandit but you see a wingman closing in, throw a Phoenix into their direction outside of IR range to either kill the enemy or force them into defensive, work on the initial bandit then assess your options. That said, the minimum launch range is relatively high so if the fight gets too tight you might want to get rid of them in exchange for some angles.

You carry way more weight in fuel than you do AIM-54's... they're not going to cripple you in a turn fight. You should use them to set up the turn fight to your advantage if they don't outright kill your opponent(s), by forcing them to make defensive maneuvers that you can take advantage of..., and if you don't fire all of them, who cares? So long as you win the fight...

So long as you win the fight... Well, I just had a dogfight with a Su-25 (AI) on GAW server, I had 3 PH, 2 Sparrows and 2 AIM-9, half fuel and no tanks. At 5k feet, with full AB I swear there was no way for me to keep up with the Su-25, he was running circles both horizontally and vertically around me. The Cat was as sluggish as a fulyl loaded A-10 and on a straight line the Su-25 was able to catch up with me as I was trying to gain some distance in full AB.... Provided DCS AI is as dumb and broken as a pile of rotten meat with worms inside, I am pretty sure the F-14 is a total hog in that configuration. Either that, or the FM has to be tuned. riboyster Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 I should note that a clean su25a can climb like a motherf#@%er too though, so be wary. -SnakeShit [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Peace through Superior Firepower EVERYTHING YOU'LL EVER NEED FOR LOMAC: http://flankertraining.com/ironhand/news.html
