flameoutme Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 I love my Rift S however I've noticed a scenario where the 80hz refresh rate becomes slightly immersion breaking in DCS. Not big time, but enough that I look forward to seeing what the Index does. Most of the time in a dog fight - I've been having a lot of fun with the 1 on 1 instant action with the Mig 29 - it looks absolutely spectacular and breath taking. And certainly neck stretching! Loving it. But there are certain times when the mig flies close by, and the angular velocity (rate of angular change from me the viewer) becomes very high. When it becomes very high, I see a ghost image of the mig for a couple of seconds as it goes by. Like a new one is painted but the old one is still there. Having a higher hz won't eliminate that, but it will tighten up the grouping. If you want to see the same effect on your monitor in windows, kick it into say 60hz, then take a mouse and giggle an open window against a dark background. You will see the corner of the window witha wide distance between paintings. Then (as long as your card/monitor allows), have it run at 120mhz, do the same giggling, and you will see the ghosting (although still present) is much tighter - a bit smoother. At any rate, still love the rift s but do intend to get an Index at some point.
dburne Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 That sounds more like ASW, ghosting of planes as they go by is an issue for when ASW is running. dburne Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 Don, remind me again of the main procedure for turning off ASW? For the Rift or Rift S. Control-Numpad1: Disables ASW and returns to the standard rendering mode. Control-Numpad2: Forces apps to 45Hz with ASW disabled. Depending on the application, you are likely to experience judder. Control-Numpad3: Forces apps to 45Hz with ASW enabled. Enabling and disabling ASW will help you see the effects of ASW. Control-Numpad4: Enables ASW. ASW will automatically turn on and off, depending on whether the app maintains a 90Hz frame rate. This will be the default rendering mode when ASW is officially enabled in the runtime. Obviously for the Rift S ASW would be 40 HZ rather than 45 HZ for the Rift. Harlikwin Posted June 4, 2019 Posted June 4, 2019 That sounds more like ASW, ghosting of planes as they go by is an issue for when ASW is running. Exactly what it sounds like. You should see if you can even pull 80fps in DCS right now. I know i cant. But im hoping the vr fix tomorrow means i will be able to. flameoutme Posted June 5, 2019 Author Posted June 5, 2019 Not really seeing any 'cause and affect' when I play around with ASW. Just wanted to mention that a high angular velocity, combined with a high pixel persistence, would rear its ugly head in that scenarior and really, only that scenario. This is why teh valve index is marketing the refresh rate combined with low pixel persistence. I have a I-9700 with 1080i card and I run with most settings down low to get the smoothest flight. It's not overly annoying, and only shows up during he highest of angular velocity changes.
YoYo Posted June 5, 2019 Posted June 5, 2019 Btw I tested Rift S and I didnt notice difference between 80 and 90 (so stable 40 and 45 fps in DCS). It works the same. I affraid this 80 before too but its ok. In Il-2 BoX it was 80 fps what it was really good, in P3Dv4.5 40 fps, ok too. Wexler Posted June 5, 2019 Posted June 5, 2019 i know exactly what the autor means.and turning off ASW solves the problem. with it, i have oneplane and another one from its half perfectly stable. killing visual identification, so i have to turn it off for dogfights or expected engagement. The control 1,2,3,4 stuff has been dodgy for me, I'm not 100% sure it works, I re-downloaded the occulus tray tool, and with that it does work. We know what you are saying about refresh rates, but no one, I mean no one is running DCS without some sort of ASW right now. And thats whats causing the ghosting, interpolated frames, with fast moving objects. New hotness: I7 9700k 4.8ghz, 32gb ddr4, 2080ti, :joystick: TM Warthog. dburne Posted June 5, 2019 Posted June 5, 2019 Don, if you get a chance (and don't mind) can you post a pic of your HOTAS and pedals? dburne Posted June 6, 2019 Posted June 6, 2019 Sweet Don! I knew it would be some high end setup. What spring set are you using in your Gunfighter and how do you like the throw with the extension (I have the desktop model)? How are you finding the Warthog Throttle? (mine has malfunctioning switches which I fixed myself and a worthless ministick that I replaced) Thanks! I am using a #40 and #30 spring on each axis. I use #30 cam on pitch and #10 cam on roll. I love the throw, once I tried extension with desk-mount it was a new ballgame for me, I would not want to go back to desk-mount. Regarding the Warthog throttle, this is the second one I have had. The first one did fine for about 7 years then a button went bad. This one I have had about 2 years and it is still fine, but I plan to probably add a Virpil throttle within the next year or so. I like the Warthog throttle, other than that button that went bad on my first one I have no real complaints with it. dburne Posted June 6, 2019 Posted June 6, 2019 Interesting Don. I am seriously considering a mod project where I turn my VKB GF MCG Pro into a force feedback stick :) (seriously) (and add in a Z twist axis as well) If I may ask, you plan to go Virpil instead of wait for VKB's TEC throttle? I like the sliding motion of the proposed TEC more. Interested in your thoughts. Well as I said I will probably wait a year or so on getting a new throttle. If VKB has an offering out at that time I will strongly consider, but all indications at least at this time seem to point to that project being very much on the back burner.
