I use headtracking (a cheaper clone of TRackIR) for internal views and mouse for the external views, like this:

LAlt+C (or RAlt+C, I'm not sure) toggles between mouse view and mouse cursor. Before I got TrackIR, I used to have it bound to one of my mouse's spare buttons.

TrackIR was too expensive for me, so I purchased this clone and use it with the FaceTrackNoIR software .. works pretty well on my PC:

Just my $0.02 - DCS is practically unenjoyable without headtracking. Once you get used to it, you'll wonder why it took you so long to get it.

I agree. Save, steal, do whatever you need to to get headtracking. It transforms the game.

Just tell her it is a reasonable hobby that keeps you out of the bars and therefore, saves you money. Additionally, you can’t stand watching those reality shows and choose to fly while she watches them.

If you want to save some cash, a DelanClip and OpenTrack are a good alternative to Track IR. You'll need a PS3 Eye camera (yes, the one used on a PlayStation 3) but these are available for peanuts and Delan Engineering sell them as part of the DelanClip kit.
