Two weeks ago I upgraded from HTC Vice to Rift S. WOW!! Rift S :thumbup::thumbup: BUT.. i returned my Rift S

Why? Bugged touchcontroller batteries.

On first time eagerly hooking up the Rift S, installing Oculus home and got to fly DCS. Everything worked perfect from get go. I was totally happy :).

After about <>4 hrs of Rift S use, the headset complained about batteries becoming empty. So i replaced both controller' batteries with new ones. Didnt help. Everytime I put on the headset usage was blocked until i acknowledge empty battery warning. Then I replaced batteries AGAIN. No luck. Googled similar stories as mine. No solution available.

After 6 hrs of headset use, it completely blocked usage, fresh batteries didnt help. Using my multimeter I measured 1,375v on both batteries (jsut lying there doing nothing apparently also consumes battery power). 1,5v AA batteries can be discharged by 40% so should work upto 0,9v.

Oculus home insisted on an update, which I did, thereafter it updated firmware of both controllers & headet. Surrrprissseee.. same problem!! The headset is effective useless.

I also have an ole' HTC Vive which worked flawlessly since day 1 never needed controllers to use it. The Rift S gave me huge improvements in framerates vs HTC Vive. Sad to let it go!

Conclusion:

Despite being VERY happy with the Rift S, i returned it. Steam notified me of my Index being ready for order, so i bought one. Sorry Rift S..

You should have gotten better battery usage since last couple of updates, mine was pretty bad at first but has improved, am getting around 2 weeks or close to it, but I have also been playing a lot of Touch supported games.

Good luck with the Index, certainly a nice looking setup.

That kind of thing can happen with any product, you should have requested a replacement.

I don’t understand the point here ?

Anyway, have fun with Index.

Point is, the Rift S is very decent value for money. I had great time with it. However, not willing to figure out why the batteries dont work.

Will I buy, or recommend a Rift S? Definitely yes.. just not now..

If you don’t like swapping out batteries then you will enjoy the Index controllers since they have built in batteries like the Vive wands (or typical game controllers like PS4/XBOX) and can last 10-12 hours per charge.

You can also charge them from the frunk USB port during extra long play (use tiny hub or USB splitter). Should the batteries start to run out just plug them in and recharge via the headset and continue your game.

He liked it but the controllers apparently didn't recognize new batteries preventing him from using it. So he returned it for Vive Index.

Sounded like you had a dodgy controller. Can happen with any product. Should have contacted support and got a new controller sent out. My batteries last weeks.
