AKA_Clutter Posted September 2, 2019 Posted September 2, 2019 OK, I just got the Rift S after having the Rift CV1 for a couple of years. I have been doing some testing between the two over the past few days. Trying to evaluate it to see if I want to keep it. I thought about the revierb, but will have the 1080 until the next gen Nivida and just don't think that the 1080 will push the reverb at a decent frame rate. Anyway, back on subject. I know the You Mileage May Vary applies, but what are the main areas of improvement in the Rift S. Here are the things I noted. 1. The SDE is noticeable smaller but still present. Overall the cockpit looks a little better but the gages still are not crisp. There may be one or two things that I can read now without having to zoom, but there are not many. 2. Some words/gages are slightly clearer but not jaw dropping 3. the MFD labels are a little clearer but still a little fuzzy. 4. the mini-mapo looks better 5. the aircraft looks better in external view (that doesn't matter much as one doesn't spend a lot of time outside the cockpit) 6. I can spot some at 8500 feet (S) instead on 6500 (CV1). 7. In testing with a friend that has the O+, I would judge the Rift S as comparable to the O+. So after reading all the post in the other thread, I have to ask, what am I missing Thanks for any and all input. ---------------- AKA_Clutter Win 10 Pro, Intel i7 12700k @4.6 GHz, EVGA RTX 3080 FTW, Ultra 64 GB G.Skill DDR4 3600 RAM, Acer 27" flat screen, HP Reverb G2, TM Warthog HOTAS with Virpil warBRD base, MFG Rudder Pedals, Virpil TCS Rotor Base with AH-64Dcollective, TrackIR 5 Pro w/Vector Expansion, PointCTRL.
USA_Recon Posted September 2, 2019 Posted September 2, 2019 Try the HP Reverb Clutter. Trust me for DCS it's great. Oculus Rift S is a good bargain $$$ but not as much of a updated compared to Reverb in terms of resolution and clarity. Your buddy Recon. Tonight got in the Hornet, I read everything. No zooming required.

Goblin Posted September 2, 2019 Posted September 2, 2019 I don’t think you’re missing anything... The Rift S isn’t a big step up, from the CV1. It’s better in some ways and not better in other ways. For me, personally, I get better performance and better view clarity. This because the S runs at 80Hz and I can set pixel density back to 1.0 and still get a better view than the CV1 on a PD of 1.5. And I wanted to get rid of the external sensors. But I miss the audio and IPD adjustment of the CV1. I never thought the S would be a dramatic step up from the CV1 and it isn’t. I’ll probably get a Reverb or Index, eventually. We’ll see.

I’ll probably get a Reverb or Index, eventually. We’ll see. I would agree with that. For good audio one needs either headphones or earbuds. I myself prefer earbuds anyway, so that worked out well for me and I get great sound. I certainly would not go back to my CV1. Yes it is not a big step up, but it is enough of a step that I am thoroughly enjoying it, and have used it daily since getting it in May. And with the Oculus Software being pretty much no muss no fuss, I spend all my time gaming rather than tweaking and adjusting. Plus with it not being such a dramatic increase the performance is quite good which allows me to run higher graphics settings and to me looks great in the Rift S. I may still try a Reverb down the road a little, to use just for my flight sims. I would still use the Rift S as I enjoy many games that support Oculus Touch. But for now I am having blast. You should try super sample. 2 options: 1: DCS World Pixel Density 2: Oculus Debugtool (google it if you don't know, it's already installed with Oculus software). For me, Rift S at 1.5 is even better than CV1 at 2.0. Mirage fanatic ! I7-7700K/ MSI RTX3080/ RAM 64 Go/ SSD / TM Hornet stick-Virpil WarBRD + Virpil CM3 Throttle + MFG Crosswind + Reverb G2. AKA_Clutter Posted September 2, 2019 Author Posted September 2, 2019 Thanks all for responding. Guess I will tweak the PD some. IIRC PD and super sampling are one and the same. ---------------- AKA_Clutter Win 10 Pro, Intel i7 12700k @4.6 GHz, EVGA RTX 3080 FTW, Ultra 64 GB G.Skill DDR4 3600 RAM, Acer 27" flat screen, HP Reverb G2, TM Warthog HOTAS with Virpil warBRD base, MFG Rudder Pedals, Virpil TCS Rotor Base with AH-64Dcollective, TrackIR 5 Pro w/Vector Expansion, PointCTRL.

AKA_Clutter Posted September 3, 2019 Author Posted September 3, 2019 I should have stated that I do run with a PD of 1.4 Didn't notice any real diffence between that abnd 1.8 but was a large fps hit. Bob_Bushman Posted September 3, 2019 Posted September 3, 2019 (edited) The settings I have landed on is max textures, max preload radius shadows to flat etc I set a pixel density of 1.3 in Oculus tray tool, and SSAA of 1.5 This looks better than running PD of 1.5 or higher, and for some reason runs and looks better than msaa of 2x. Which honestly doesn't make a lot of sense. Rosebud47 Posted September 3, 2019 Posted September 3, 2019 That´s interesting to set SSAA instead of PD - I would have thought, the effect should be pretty much the same, whereas SSAA should also effects the image for the monitor and PD only effects the image for the VR goggles, but who knows, where the algorythms differentiate. SSAA has no effect in VR (except placebo maybe). It's there for monitor use only. This is from one of the devs some time ago. Intel Core i7 6700K @ 4.5GHz.
