I recently started practicing AAR with wake turbulence enabled, I tried only S-3B so far and noticed that when my Hornet moves closer to the basket I experience pretty violent turbulence (despite I approach from left and below the tanker) so it becomes harder to connect, but after connecting this effect kind of disappears. Is that specific to S-3B aerodynamics (maybe because engines are closer to the fuselage)? I didn't experience similar effect when I perform AAR with Viper and boom from KC-135.

 

Is that because I do something wrong?

I always move from observation to pre-connect below the wake and just about every time the tanker is turning. Never really seen any issues with wake turbulence or jet wash. Even before the wake turb. feature was introduced I noticed slight slipping or skidding of the tankers similar to uncoordinated turn. Could have been just AI's flight model or "moi":D

Currently, when flying in fingertip form. with other Hornets I have this sensation of being pulled in toward the lead jet when really close. Again, could be just me.

Now, I do notice the jet wash or wake (sometimes quite strong) during turning fights. After a circle or 2 there is a good chance of flying into it.

Good, take small steps and gradually increase the difficulty. It's normal to constantly move the throttle for small corrections etc. Ideally, you want to find your position and then make small throttle movements, but if you see you're falling behind or are getting too close, you might need to correct more.

I have been learning the F-18C for the last 2 weeks.

Refuelling now feels very easy but like someone said above best to do it as often as you can.

The best tip I got from a youtube vid.

Switch on AP and a alt hold. As you get close trim up or down to knock off the AP, But...

The aircraft smooths out your inputs once you have had the AP at some point.

Now at close to calling for the probe just use trim for pitch and I find I only need stick inputs for the roll.

As you walk the probe into the bastet I need to just keep trimming down to hold it right and then its all down to throttle and roll. All very small input and I use a curve of 20 on roll and pitch (that could change)

Sounds like you're talking about flying Flankers, except the autopilot part:smilewink:

On the other hand, whatever works for you.
