No, the Ka-50 does have a doppler sensor to measure local velocity, but this isn't a self-contained navigation instrument. It's called "DISS" in Russian, which is an acronym for Doppler Speed and Drift Indicator in Russian. It looks like two light bulbs on the bottom rear of the fuselage, recessed to be horizontal when on the ground. You'll find the same instrument on the Mi-28 and Mi-26 as well.

Great video, very informative, it shows the work and attention to details being programed into the sim, I hope the future aircrafts are done as well.

Can we start the engines with the rotor brake engaged?

 

 

Good question! On many Russian helicopters, the rotor brake is very rudimentary (but hey, it works!) and there is a cutout switch so that if the rotor brake is applied at all, you cannot start the engines. It would not surprise me if the Ka-50 had the same type of rotor brake (Although, to be fair, I don't know if this is the case).

 

Conversely, many Western helicopters have a hydraulic rotor brake that is much more complicated and prone to problems, but you can start the engines with the rotor brake engaged. The only reason to do so, however, is to allow the rotor to rapidly go from not moving to moving very quickly in the event of starting in high wind conditions (slow moving rotors are very susceptible to flapping in high wind conditions and could be damaged and could even possibly strike the tail boom). As a side effect, it makes some types of maintenance simpler (like engine washing) because the rotors won't start turning when you motor the engine, but that's not really a big deal. It's really just for starting in high winds.

Great video Wags, must admit I was umming and arrring about buying black shark but I think you've swayed me. Love to see a video of what happens if you do things wrong, like starting with the rotor brake on, fuel off, or not enabling the power system correctly :)
