Should I have SteamVR installed even if I don't play DCS via Steam?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I have heard of various tweaks which can be done to improve VR performance via the SteamVR control panel.

I have purchased DCS and modules direct from ED not via Steam, so have never thought about using SteamVR, however should I install it and would I benefit from using it, despite my DCS install having nothing to do with Steam?

For info I use a Rift S.

Thanks for your suggestions

For the Rift S, you don't need SteamVR.

One of the huge benefits of using a Rift is that you can ignore Steam VR for most games. In fact some Steam games, including another popular flight sim, can be played without Steam VR on the Rift by using Open Composite software :)

So I assume that not using steam VR is only an option for Oculus users and not HP or HTC users? I noticed that steam VR is taking a lot of resources as well and none of the settings for video actually do anything in DCS like reprojection, smoothing and the resolution slider makes zero difference in the game or not enough to notice even at 180%.

Sorry Don, that is simply incorrect. SteamVR uses very little resources and is, in fact, very efficient.

I have another flight sim that does not have native Oculus support, it supports Steam VR.

I changed over to Open Composite for my Rift S rather than Steam VR for that game, and gained a nice improvement in performance.

So in this instance with my setup, Steam VR was more taxing on performance.

For sure, but that doesn’t make SteamVR a ‘resource pig’!
