Kaiju Posted March 11, 2020 Posted March 11, 2020 Hi, is it possible to make disappear fuel tank racks like ventral rails when we don't use fuel tank please ? Airhunter Posted March 11, 2020 Posted March 11, 2020 Operationally Tomcats never flew without them except at airshows. Would still be nice to have but I deem this very low priority, considering how many essential and more important things we still dont have.

The US flew them without in the late 70s as well; filming of "The Final Countdown" featured an operational VF-84 and I recall them having clean jets, no tanks no pylons, in that. It will be good and necessary for "DCS Airshow" configuration. And It will be useful for some flight tests due to light-weighted .

I was sure I read somewhere they removed them at TOP GUN or when operating from ashore. This video shows non-airshow configurations with no racks at several instances for A/B cats. Starting from 10:20 none of the jets on the flight line have them installed. Edited March 14, 2020 by Wizard_03 DCS F/A-18C :sorcerer:

Operationally, I've never seen them without tanks. The FRS birds came to the boat without tanks but the fleet guys always had them. The video is old and grainy; can't tell which is fleet or the FRS but also, ashore the tanks come off and on frequently for a variety of reasons. DO it or Don't, but don't cry about it. Real men don't cry!
Nealius Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 What years were you in service? Things constantly change. What wasn't done operationally during your time could very well have been done operationally before your time.

Jackjack171 Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 I like your YouTube vids btw. DO it or Don't, but don't cry about it. Real men don't cry!
Nealius Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 Thanks. From what limited research I can do tanks were always on operationally during the time you were in. In the early days of the A models they were often slick, though. Mostly pictures of VF-1 and VF-84, so maybe it was a squadron thing back then.

I see video footage from -The Final Countdown. Was mostly filmed out of NAS Key West I believe.

Operational (fleet) birds always had tanks, RAG birds didn't. The airshow birds never do for obvious reasons. I wish there was a way to move the racks for an air show demo as well! DO it or Don't, but don't cry about it. Real men don't cry!
Wizard_03 Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 Perhaps we'll see it introduced with the F-14A, as far as I can tell Iranian birds do not use the tanks at all, and therefore don't have the racks either. DCS F/A-18C :sorcerer:
