PL_Harpoon Posted March 22, 2020 Posted March 22, 2020 I need some help with upgrading my rig. Basically it's a typical question whether I should get a new CPU or GPU. My current specs are: i5-6900K 3.7GHz 500GB SSD GTX 980Ti 32GB RAM DDR4 Rift S For most of the time the game runs fine (40FPS, which is max for Rift S), especially on an empty map. However as soon as there's more stuff going on (like an autogen mission or a busy server) it drops to about 20. So, my first guess would be to get a new CPU. However. Neither the GPU nor any of the cores reach 100% and when I increase the view distance the FPS also drops (which I think would suggest a lacking GPU. Besides 980tI seems a bit too weak for VR, so I'm at a loss My budget is 500-600$ tops. I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Minimum VR specs say 3+ GHz CPU, which you have, and a GTX 1070, which has 8 GB ram. 980ti is only 6 GB. Because of VR, your GPU has to process for two screens. Which GPU is up to your wallet. Looks like you can get a 1080Ti for $400-500 or a 2070 super for $500-600. IMHO, with the recent updates and changes to cpu/GPU usage, I might wait a little bit to see where this is all going if you can. The_Nephilim Posted March 22, 2020 Posted March 22, 2020 Well an Overclocked CPU is a good thing to try if you have sufficent cooler.. if it is running stock you maybe able to squeeze a bit more from that cpu and just get a better vid card.. BitMaster Posted March 23, 2020 Posted March 23, 2020 Clarify your CPU listed, there is no such CPU !!! either an i7-6900K -or- i5-9600K....but no i5-6900k it does matter which one. The 980GTX-ti is not a good VR card btw, it has some stupid quirks Gigabyte Aorus X570S Master - Ryzen 5900X - Gskill 64GB 3200/CL14@3600/CL14 - Sapphire Nitro+ 7800XT - 4x Samsung 980Pro 1TB - 1x Samsung 870 Evo 1TB - 1x SanDisc 120GB SSD - Heatkiller IV - MoRa3-360LT@9x120mm Noctua F12 - Corsair AXi-1200 - TiR5-Pro - Warthog Hotas - Saitek Combat Pedals - Asus XG27ACG QHD 180Hz - Corsair K70 RGB Pro - Win11 Pro/Linux - Phanteks Evolv-X
dburne Posted March 23, 2020 Posted March 23, 2020 Definitely GPU. Also if your CPU is a K processor, if not already you should be able to gain some by overclocking it with a decent cooler. Strong05 Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 GPU, and def invest in a good cooler (air or water) and overclock the cpu, definitely worth it. 5800X3d, 32GB DDR4@3400, 6800 xt, Reverb G2, Gunfighter/TMWH
BitMaster Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 That CPU is all you need, overclock it with an AIO or DIY loop is all you need to do imho. speed-of-heat Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 Gpu, the best you can get, start with second hand 1080ti’s if you can find them on eBay etc... ideally a 2080ti if you can, or waiting until later this year for a 3000 series card. You should be able to air cool your gpu up to 5ghz without too much problem,I use https://noctua.at/en/nh-d15 a and a case with really good airflow. PL_Harpoon Posted March 27, 2020 Author Posted March 27, 2020 Just a small update. I've bought a 1080Ti and it's quite good. I can bump up the graphics a bit and still keep the game running at 40 FPS. Plus setting pixel density to something higher than 1.0 really helps with the clarity. It's still struggling a bit on a busy MP server. I've tested it on Hoggit yesterday (20-30ish ppl) and sometimes, especially around the airport, the framerate drops to around 20. But I still need to play around with optimized shaders and I haven't touched the CPU yet, so overall I'm quite happy. Cheers!
