Random stars on f18 radar

This happens exclusively on multiplayer games.

 

I'm surprised nobody else has mentioned it, or I'm being really dumb...

 

I'll be flying enroute and suddenly a contact appears on radar, not a blip, but a small star symbol.

 

I can move the tdc over it and get some info, it appears to be a slow moving aircraft at various heights. I tried to follow it once, and yet when you get within 1nm, there's nothing to be seen.

 

I'm not sure if it's tracking old missiles that didn't respawn properly or what, but it's kinda weird

I don't play multiplayer and therefore haven't seen the stars, but I seem to remember in some other computer flight sims and strategy games over the years that a star-shaped symbol on the radar screen indicated that the enemy had got their ECM jammers on to produce a "ghost return" or something like that to confuse your radar, dunno if there's a clue there?

F-18 is immune to ECM right now, symbology isn't added either.

An idea- arrange with your multiplayer opponent to play a friendly non-competitive experimental game with you so that when/if the stars appear you can ask him what he just did, if anything..:)
