Flyby Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 I will feel so stoopid if game engine lighting has been covered, but I had to ask, after reading the FAQ, and doing a search (no joy either way). Will exterior and interior lighting changes be implemented? For instance, if sitting in the BS cockpit and rotating the heli from a hover, will I see changing interior shadows and glaring, showing the effect of sunlight (clear day/cloudy day)? In exterior view how will the sunlight be implemented, say while flying along with sunrise at your back? Can it be expected that during rising of the sun, shadows and color of ground objects (buldings, forests, fields, tanks, etc) will change accordingly? You know me. Just trolling for info. Boberro Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 I hope there will be HDR of course... Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D ಠ_ಠ ツ
ED Team Glowing_Amraam Posted January 1, 2008 ED Team Posted January 1, 2008 Hmm, just guessing here, but i think the type of graphical features you're asking for will be included in future projects after Black Shark. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgJRhtnqA-67pKmQ3A2GsgA ED youtube channel https://www.facebook.com/glowingamraam My facebook page

kiss4luna Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 will those external objects, such as trees, blades, etc, cast shadows on the inside of the cockpit? RTX 3070
-sulan- Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 I guess there will be shadows in the cockpit cast by your own aircraft at least, that are "correct" relative to the sun. What kiss4luna said, if exterior objects could also cast shadows in the cockpit would be really cool when you're sneaking behind a bunch of trees or a building! HDR would also be nice, but I think thats more of a glare effect.. I don't think it has anything to do with shadows (?), but it looks very nice indeed if it's used properly...
jakethesnake630 Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 Dynamic shadows in the cockpit (considering it's going to be 3dof) will be brilliant. Not just the cockpit framing casting shadows down but also the panels and switches each casting its own shadow relative to the sunshine (obviously turn-off-able for the lesser powered computers) As for HDR, for a simulation I can't see the point of it. It's best used in games where you going from an area of extreme sunlight/brightness to an area of darkness. I guess the only time you'd do this is when looking outside, and then casting your eyes down at the panel but the effect would surely be OTT and unrealistic.
Boberro Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 HDR is needed - that if it will look unrealistic like said jakethesnake630 depends from programmers. Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Flyby Posted January 3, 2008 Author Posted January 3, 2008 Hey this thread is hanging in there. Now if only someone from ED or otherwise in the know wil come in and tell us if such dynamic lighting is in the plan. I like the idea of shadows cast by close objects (with maybe a way to set the range at which those shadows become rendered). I like the thinking that humans have predator eyes, meaning our eyes are naturally drawn to movement. Imagine hovering behind a small group of trees which are between you and the sun. When the trees sway in a breeze, eyes look to the movement. Also imagine the shadow cast that makes you look up in time to see another Black Shark passing right over you. Heck i don't know. I want all the cool stuff that will keep me immersed for hours at a time. Oh, can I have it by the middle of next week?:music_whistling: Flyby The U.S. Congress is the best governing body that BIG money can buy.
warthogmadman987 Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 actually, this is a really good question. I would also like to hear more information about this.
Flyby Posted January 4, 2008 Author Posted January 4, 2008 well here's hoping! actually, this is a really good question. I would also like to hear more information about this. Thanks for the co-signing of the question, WHMM. Here's an aside question for you. I notice in your sig that you (too) have dsl. I have never gamed online with dls, haven't had it very long and I haven't been gaming for a while now. How is the connection working out? Also, what fsb are you running your ram on? thanks, Fly The U.S. Congress is the best governing body that BIG money can buy.

My brother and I play battlefield 2 together on the same servers all the time, same internet connection. I dont need to be a speed demon so it works for me. I even had 3 computers on this conection once and still had a ping of 90 on a server in Europe. Lockon works just the same, as do almost all the games I play! Also Right now i couldnt tell ya what fsb i am running on my ram.
Flyby Posted January 4, 2008 Author Posted January 4, 2008 ya DSL! sounds good to me. I'll be good to go (once I go). Thanks WHMM! Almost back online, Flyby The U.S. Congress is the best governing body that BIG money can buy.
ED Team Wags Posted January 6, 2008 ED Team Posted January 6, 2008 Given that this first iteration of DCS will use a modified version of the existing TFCSE graphics engine, I would not expect to see such changes. Lighting and shadow changes would however be a hallmark of the new engine currently in development or later DCS iterations. Flyby Posted January 6, 2008 Author Posted January 6, 2008 Thanks for chiming in Wags. One more thing known, plus a tiny glimpse into the future plans of DCS. Seems like the groundwork for a long relationship to me. ;) Flyby The U.S. Congress is the best governing body that BIG money can buy.
