testudine2002 Posted May 10, 2020 Posted May 10, 2020 I recently reinstalled DCS. I didn't go for any of the free stuff because disk space is an issue with me. I looked in module manager and the only planes I have are F18, SU25, and Mustang. The maps I have are Caucus, Nevada, and Persian Gulf. My DCS folder is 136 GB. Is this normal? Is there a way to see how much disk space each module is using? Does deactivating the module in Module Manager save me space? Sorry for the noobness.

Aircraft are actually quite small compared to the maps
wizav Posted May 10, 2020 Posted May 10, 2020 my is 138 GB plus I could not install Persian Gulf (not enough space) have 25 GB for page file and 22 GB left for other things. I use Caucasus, NTTR and Normandy [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Bobik2002 Posted May 10, 2020 Posted May 10, 2020 Deactivating dosen't save your space. Ryzen 9 5900x | 32GB DDR4 | RTX 3090 | 32GB RAM
Sandman1330 Posted May 10, 2020 Posted May 10, 2020 It will be the maps. I’ve had the same problem in the past. In your DCS directory, under mods/terrains, there is a folder for each map. You can check the size of that folder to know what each map takes up. Mods/aircraft is the same. If you have a second drive, maybe another SSD or a spinning drive with more space, you can move one or two maps onto the other drive using symbolic links. https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/16226/complete-guide-to-symbolic-links-symlinks-on-windows-or-linux/ This tutorial explains how to make them, simply move the whole terrain folder then create a symlink back to the mods/terrains folder. Just make sure to keep the same directory name, and understand that if you take the terrain off the SSD and put it on a spinning drive, loading missions in that particular terrain will be much slower. Therefore I’d recommend doing it with only one or two terrains that you don’t use often. hornblower793 Posted May 10, 2020 Posted May 10, 2020 I use Treespace as a utility (great for this kind of thing) On my system, Nevada is about 34GB, Persian Gulf is 33GB and Caucasus is 16GB. The biggest aircraft folder I have is the MiG-21BIS at 6.2GB Windows 11 Home ¦ Z790 AORUS Elite AX motherboard ¦ i7-13700K ¦ 64GB Corsair Vengeance DDR5 memory @ 5600MHz ¦ Samsung 990 Pro 1TB SSD for OS, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB SSD for DCS ¦ MSI GeForce RTX 4090 Gaming X Trio 24GB ¦ Virpil WarBRD base with VFX grip, Thrustmaster A10c and F/A-18 grips ¦ VKB Gunfighter Mk4 and MCG Pro ¦ Thrustmaster Warthog Throttle ¦ VKB STECS Throttle ¦ Virpil TCS rotor base with Shark and AH-64D grips ¦ MFG Crosswinds ¦ Total Controls Multi-Function Button Box ¦ Pimax Crystal
testudine2002 Posted May 10, 2020 Author Posted May 10, 2020 Thanks for your replies. I do have two follow-up questions though: a) The three maps and three aircraft I own are only about 90 GB. Is it normal for the total DCD Folder size to be 136 GB. Seems like a lot? b) What if I want to remove the Persian Gulf Map. Someone has already indicated that deactivating them in Module Mgr won't remove them from my hard drive. How do I do that? Do I simply delete the folder that I don't want? In this case Persian Gulf?
Svsmokey Posted May 10, 2020 Posted May 10, 2020 A: yes , the base engine is very large B: You can choose to uninstall them in the DCS Module Manager . 9700k @ stock , Aorus Pro Z390 wifi , 32gb 3200 mhz CL16 , 1tb EVO 970 , MSI RX 6800XT Gaming X TRIO , Seasonic Prime 850w Gold , Coolermaster H500m , Noctua NH-D15S , CH Pro throttle and T50CM2/WarBrD base on Foxxmounts , CH pedals , Reverb G2v2
testudine2002 Posted May 10, 2020 Author Posted May 10, 2020 Got it. The little trash can will remove them permanently, and the slider will deactivate them, but keep them on your hard drive. Thanks again for the help...nice community for sure.
