Ok, I successfully run the same simple mission (me agains 2 mig-21) several times. But this time I do everything exactly the same, however the aim-54 missiles ignore the targets completely.

Both targets had priority numbers assigned. There are no tti numbers visible on the radar. The target icons are both flashing. I can release 2 addition missiles, which is not normal. They also ignore the targets (seen in saved track with tacview).

What just happened? Is the radar so unreliable?

Over 40 views and no answer. My question is either very stupid or nobody has experienced the same thing?

I should have posted in the f14 forum. Can I move this post? I did not find a way to do so.

I can certainly say, since the last update or so the Phoenix has sucked at hitting anything.

Interesting. I fly latest beta. Just did another try and this time it worked very nicely. Ttl was visible again and both bandits got hit.

But the icons flashed, so that seems to be normal.

I noticed that if you engage from too far away, both mig21 try to avoid the missiles successfully by flying in the opposite direction until the missives loose momentum. They do not do this if you engage later.

Tacview is a big help analyzing this.

But I still would like to know why the ttl sometimes is not visible and all missiles just ignore all targets.

It all depends on the range and altitude at which you fire them off. Agile fighters can beat the Phoenix easily if done right. On one occasion I managed to hit five birds out of six... on another I only hit two, but fired them from a longer distance. Lots of factors to consider. Online, my effectiveness with these are at about 60-70%.

Thanks, I have similar experience, but only against ai. I never fly online.

But what I have experienced in this on time was different.

The targets all had priority numbers assigned to them by the radar and I was able to release a missile each, but then the missiles were not assigned to the targets. The targets did not get time to impact numbers assigned to the right of their icons and the missiles did not target any of the planes. I was able to release another 2 missiles while the other 2 where still flying (usually not possible) with same result. All missiles just ignored the targets.

Do you play the Open Beta or Stable?

Jester, if in TWS mode, identifies incl. auto-prio with the first target flashing.

I can highly recommend playing on airbase-capture servers. These are like small dynamic campaigns, very interesting especially with the Tomcat because you have everything... from high flying to low ground-hugging radar. Some sort of chaos which can result during a war. You are in many different situations while trial & error singleplayer missions/campaigns get boring quickly. Let me tell you that the RIO seat is damn fine online ;)

I fly beta. Thanks for the tip, but I would not survive 1 minute. I just do not get enough time in the simulation. I am really a noob although I am already flying since years.

Well... beta is way too dynamic in regards of bugs. Online, you would choose an airbase far away from the action to get more time checking out the radar or working with Jester on AWACs call outs.

YouTube helps as well speeding up the learning process.

I am using YouTube extensively. I would not have tried dcs without all these very helpful videos. I just do not get enough time for dcs. About 2h per week.

Make sure your ACM switch is down.

Had this happen to me, only to realize my ACM switch was on, so the PHs launched in mad dog rather than take tracking information from the Tomcat.

I am confused. Are you talking about the acm cover? What does that have to do with the radar-missile connection? I never thought that. But will try it out nevertheless.

Ya, the ACM cover is an "all hands on deck" for WVR engagement for the plane and sets it up fully for dogfights and i think it bypasses TWS for STT lock.

Missile prep is on? If the missiles launched and the targets were on radar in front of you jow far?

Less than 30 miles you have really good odds hitting a fighter. Still things happen. When using the phoenix in TWS you will know it is locked onto something several ways.

One is the hud repeater. In hud repeater mod the "missile ladder" will appear along tbe side. On the radar the targets besides having numers and range data appearing one of them usually will be lit up or blinking. Otherwise you may just be firing the Aim 54s totaly blind.

One way to check if theyre on radar in front of you is jester>STT lock>choose target. The ones in yellow YOUR RADAR sees. If theyre blue theyre data link targets. If you can see contacts in that then its weird its not working. My next question is trying to STT lock. Phoenixes still do it and its my "ghetto iff" in when you STT you can pick which target and also the TCS slaves to it. Fighters you can usualy id at 15-30 miles. Bombers 30 to 40. =/

But ya try STT lock if tws doesnt work. However tws really should it sounds like the migs are just spoofing your missiles.. make sure your phoenix is selected (PH) on hud. Mode doesnt rlly matter whether cruise or a2a - when you select the phoenixes. Change the VDI to see your radar. You should see the contacts and they should light up and blink etc as the jester AI "hooks" them for phoenix launch.

Whem you fire a missile have you hit f6 to see what it does?

The ACM cover up makes your phoenixes go immediately pitbull on launch. Its an emergency thing for dogfighting it. I dont really use it. Just the red cover not even the switch under it which drops your tanks and all non air 2 air stuff iirc

Solved the riddle. Thanks Redliner7 and all others who helped. I tried the ACM cover (which I am fairly certain, I did not touch) and noticed that it will switch the "MSL MODE switch" to Boresight mode. So, I switched the ACM cover back and tried the fire 2 missiles with boresight mode on. Well, I got the result that I once saw. No TTI count down visible and both missiles ignored the targets. I then switch the "MSL MODE switch" back to normal and was able to send another 2 missiles towards the 2 bandits hitting both of them.

So, "MSL MODE switch" should always be in Normal mode if you want to use TWS correctly.

Glad it helped.

I have my ACM switch on a joystick bind which does 4 actions at once... Including the boresight mode. So I'm glad you were able to go one level deeper to figure out the root cause.

Part of the fun is figuring out if it's user error or bugs
