Well an interesting debat about close combat while engaging to a dogfight.

What do you think about having mirrors vs not.

Many virtual pilots believe that mirrors are a waste and I actually believe the opposite.

What is your opinion on that matter .

I wouldn't say turning on mirrors is as drastic of a Situational Awareness boost as a TrackIR. Granted you might see that missile trail or another aircraft behind you through the mirrors. But generally you will not see that as the blind spots are worse than big rig truckers.

Mirrors are nice, but its not something I would categorize as "OMG how can you play without those!?!?!"

The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world.

I'd have them on just for the realism factor and because they look nice.

Regarding FPS, why are the mirrors in Lockon so taxing anyways? It was the same way with the Flanker 2 series. A couple of months ago, I bought Wings over Europe just for the hell of it. One thing I noticed is that mirrors in the F-15 look and work great, but I didn't see much FPS difference vs. them being off/on. The only thing I can think of is the fact that WoE's terrain is not nearly as detailed as Lockon's. However, I can still load up Flanker 2.51 and have a very small but noticible FPS hit with mirrors on even in that old sim.

good reference for the horizon and u may notice the enemy aircraft at your 6, or the Moon... or the runway after take off which is cool. ON 24/7

Or, if you're a good lead and he's a good wingman, he'll be right on your wing, and you'll never see him in your mirror because he won't be cheating to the six.

Would be good if the mirrors did not draw all the buildings - then would not see such a FPS hit

I have them on since my hardware can handle it. Even though I am sure they are useless in 1on1 dogfight, for a few reasons, they can save your ass from time to time. One instance 3 of us just took of from base and were climbing. As we were climbing I noticed a dot in my mirror and I thought to myself "did I just see an aircraft behind me?" After looking into all players in the server (which is kind of unrealistic now that I think about it) I notice only 3 of us being on our side and few enemy on another side. It suddenly hit me that it definitely wasn't a friendly behind us so I shouted on comms we possibly have bandit on our 6... I went around and turned radar on and what do you know... this guy was just about 25km ahead of me now and again I yelled to my wingmen we got a bandit on our 6 close... foxed him and he was down... if it wasn't for the mirrors this guy (it was one of the RvE guys) would have snuck in for nice ET shot and couls have very easily gottem the 3 of us.

So, the leason of the story is... mirrors are usefull and add to imersion when flying so if your harware can handle it, turn them on. :)

Dont forget that even if you have mirrors OFF due to FPS reasons, you can still press N or M keys while you are flying to have them pop up into existence whilst you hold that key.
