Hi,

I just tested new automatic lasing in hornet. Thanks to Grim Reapers for the great tutorial on that. I dropped some gbu's on Tupolevs and destroyd them. Then I tried to hit A-50 on the ground. First with laser maverick and I damaged the plane with one maverick. I thought maybe I should try something bigger and I dropped gbu-16 on the plane and damaged it. I just wanted to destroy the plane and dropped two gbu-16 but I only damaged it and there was some smoke visible. I thought that if I dropped 2000 pounds of bombs on the plane maybe it should have been destroyed. Or am I totally wrong? And the lasing point was so dead on on the plane.

Frankly, when delivered precisely onto the wingbox (that section where the wings meet with the fuselage), I’d expect a single 500lbs class bomb to do the job, even with an unfueled plane. These are purposefully light build (aluminium) structures, these are not tanks. And you don‘t even need two GBU-16s for a T-72, so...

A GBU-16 is way, way more than enough to destroy that, IRL. Even a 1000 lbs rock thrown from high altitude is likely enough to render the plane a complete loss.

It's just that the visual model in DCS might not reflect that (the A-50 3D model is quite old), but for all intents and purposes, it should be just a crater and some scrap on the tarmac.

If it was the old model I wonder why it does not say destroyed in red letters though. It's always just damaged. If I drop gbus on largers Tupolevs they are always destroyed. Maybe if someone could try it out? It just feels abit lackluster that you do everything right but you don't get the satisfaction.

The problem here is that in DCS planes, even the 'simpler' old AI planes, have a damage model and ground units generally don't. The same rules apply as if you crash-land somewhere in the countryside:

The plane is rendered completely inoperable, but as far as the 'rules' of DCS are concerned, it is not destroyed. For any plane to be counted as destroyed it either has to impact the ground at sufficient speed to explode, or the pilot has to eject. That's what makes it awfully difficult to get the 'destroyed' flag on planes on the ramp. In theory, a human pilot could hit the ground crew repair, wait three minutes and be back in business.

Could you post a link from the tutorial, I am also interested in watching it

You're probably looking for that one:

Those could be interesting for you as well:

Regarding the A-50, it's an old model and probably its static variant simply has to many HP icon_redface.gif

A-50 is the first one I just can't destroy. I just tested largest Tupolev bomber and it destroyed just fine. Though it looked like first gbu only damaged it and second one completely destroyed it. All fighters I have tested can be destroyed just fine with one maverick.

This is link to new lasing video. Dcs community is making great tutorial videos. Much nicer to learn new things like this than reading manual.
