near_blind Posted June 18, 2020 Share Posted June 18, 2020 A thing to keep in mind is the F-14 was designed decades before NVGs became a truly common fixture in aircraft cockpits, and is not optimized for them. Try turning down the brightness to make it clearer. I personally find it's also easier to read the HUD in NVGs with the red night filter disengaged. IronMike Posted June 18, 2020 Share Posted June 18, 2020 you need to turn the brightness to almost 0, and you will get a really clear hud even with NVGs. personally 1 use 1st step on HUD brightness, 2nd step on VDI brightness, 3rd or 4th step on HSD brightness and 2 clicks for instrument, acm panel and console light brightness. Wouldn't they be set to minimum when you turn them on? Not really, because in that case you would be forced to use NVGs immediately. While most of us turn them down, we also use the time when everything is still lit for pre flight preparations etc... It is just much less hassle to set the tacan etc etc when floods are on, to change the QNH when the instrument is fully lit, to perform checks if you want and so on. Imagine the other way around, you wanted to do that and have to either fiddle around with the NVGs or start turning everything up, only so that you have to turn it back down again... Thus, having them turned up, results in the same and also less worksteps for both parties.
