SuperKungFu Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 I do admit on other aircrafts it looks good, like the F-14 with the jolly roger colors, it also has the black outlines. But on the flanker, I think it kinda makes it to western-like. But whatever, the Flanker design is beautiful nonetheless. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Alfa Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 Reminds me of some MiG-29 schemes you see. Some MiG-29 schemes? I think you will be hard pressed to find a MiG-29 scheme that doesn't have that black patch in front of the cockpit :) . JJ
nscode Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 New Serbian and Hungarian do not Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
RvETito Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 The black paint in front of the canopy of the older MiG-29's is there on purpose- to eliminate any possible light reflections from the skin which could disturb the operation of the EOS. "See, to me that's a stupid instrument. It tells what your angle of attack is. If you don't know you shouldn't be flying." - Chuck Yeager, from the back seat of F-15D at age 89. =RvE=
Pilotasso Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 Its adopted on a number of westernaircraft as well, its suposed to avoid the sun reflections creating a glow that would blind the pilot forward. .
nscode Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 Now low reflection colors are used instead. Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
Alfa Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 New Serbian and Hungarian do not I know there are some schemes without ;) . JJ
RedTiger Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Some MiG-29 schemes? I think you will be hard pressed to find a MiG-29 scheme that doesn't have that black patch in front of the cockpit :) . This is mainly what I had in mind (as seen in LOMAC) So...what about the Fulcrum makes it so prone to glare that everyone paints that area black? What differs from the Flanker? Or ANY other aircraft, Western or Russian for that matter.
Maximus_G Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 ...its suposed to avoid the sun reflections creating a glow that would blind the pilot forward. Yep, and besides MiG-29, it could also be seen on MiG-25, MiG-23, MiG-21, Su-15... Especially when the aircraft has a "glossy" finish, like the silver one. But the elder types like MiG-15, MiG-17, early MiG-21 and Su-17 painted in silver don't have that black-paint area, so we could assume it appeared later, based on years of operational experience.
leafer Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 (edited) Flanker is the sexiest fighter ever. Edited October 13, 2008 by leafer ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
mikoyan Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 The mig-29 is the Ferrari of the sky; great exterior with super sexy design, crude interior and accessories, brute performance and great handling and trusty engine. There should be a red mig-29!:pilotfly: 1
Alfa Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 So...what about the Fulcrum makes it so prone to glare that everyone paints that area black? What differs from the Flanker? Or ANY other aircraft, Western or Russian for that matter. Good question - maybe its just a question of the initial standard scheme being that way and later variations sticking to the "tradition" :) . JJ

Maybe. The only other thing I could think of is that the view down the nose was much more pronounced than previous aircraft. Could be anything really.
