SCPanda Posted August 27, 2020 Posted August 27, 2020 From what I have read about the tinted canopy, it was designed to protect the pilot from radiation caused by nuclear bombs, which explains why it was widely used during the cold war. However, after the cold war, the air force realized nuclear warfare might not really happen so they stopped using the tinted canopy. Of course, there are still some left that are still in service. There is not need to replace the tinted canopy since it basically has no negative effect. IDK if the canopy can diminishes RCS, if it does it should be very minimum effect and doesn't really matter since ground and air to air radar can still detact the Viper, because the Viper doesn't use a stealth design.

Based on talks with SMEs, around 2007 the USAF/ANG started using the transparent canopies and phasing out the gold tint. Both have the same RCS reduction properties. For me personally, using the gold canopy is easier on my eyes (I fly exclusively in VR).
