Can you elaborate more? If you are moving the marker around in the hud (i dont remember what it is called) it will remain on what ever piece of terrain you marked. You dont have to TMS forward anything to "ground stabilize"

Posted

according to manual, page 91 chart, and page 366 paragraph 4, when HUD is SOI TMS FWD short sets TDC Ground Stabilize. without this the HUD TDC creeps. it is automatic if close enough to target and manual attempt can be done if auto is not working.

The following HOTAS functions apply when HUD is SOI:

• Ground Stabilize (TMS Forward Short). Ground stabilize happens automatically after slewing as long as a position on the ground can be calculated; additionally, while the TDC is still caged within the TVV, this command will attempt to ground stabilize the TDC. If successful, the TDC will ground stabilize on that point. If unsuccessful (location > 13nm away), an “X” will be drawn over the TDC and the TDC will be HUD stabilized with an “X” indicating an invalid designation. If TMS Forward Short is selected while the TDC is HUD stabilized with an “X” drawn over it, the TDC will again attempt to establish a position on the ground. If successful, the TDC will ground stabilize; if unsuccessful, the TDC will remain HUD stabilized, with an “X” drawn over the TDC.

If the TDC automatically and continuously attempts to ground stabilize, why do I need TMS Forward Short to ground stabilize (HUD is SOI)?

Think of it like this:

You roll in, but the velocity vector over desired target, TMS forward short. It can be more accurate than slewing the TDC.

oh that makes sense. like what you can do in hornet.

Correct, very similar "tool." A similar thing can be done with the TGP, if bore sighted and TGP SOI - you can utilize TMSFS to ground stabilize it. That being said, with the "new" method to bore sight the TGP, the TDC with HUD SOI is the method I prefer (and preferred with the original A10C as well).

Glad it helped clarify, and hope it helps the OP as well.

By "new" method do you mean the whole STBY/A-G/reselect as SOI thing, or is there another method?

(Off topic, but what happened to the option to receive instant email notifications of new posts? I've subscribed and set notifications to On but don't get anything anymore.)

it would make more sense to allow the pilot to aim the jet at target area and then "boresight" the TGP at where the jet is pointing. thanks!

See below - and great question regarding the "new" forums. So far, not a fan. Seems many things are dropped for notifications for me as well.

You can do that. HMCS SOI, make sure TDC is caged for HMCS, DMSRL. Done.

Otherwise, have the TGP bore sighted already - put the nose towards the target, TGP SOI, when the TGP LOS indicator is over the target area, TMSFS or "bump" the HOTAS slew. When they implement the B/S option via OSB - you can have another option. But the previous method of returning the TGP to bore sight was incorrect for real world operation.

You can also have the HUD as SOI, ensure the TDC is set to the velocity vector (done by CHAS), TMSFL, CHFL to slave TGP and other sensors to it (which would be at the velocity vector)...

And as advertised - if you haven't seen the newest video from Wags for the incoming updates - your B/S OSB button will arrive with the next update (scheduled for the 5th):

1:05 into the video

So your wish is soon to be granted.
