I get a massive drop in frame rate, to like 2 fps, when I have the Viggen's radar in 60 km mode. If I switch to 15, 30, or 120 km it returns to normal rates (I'm used to 25-45 fps in VR). My setup is Ryzen 5 1400, RTX2070 Super, 32 GB RAM, and Oculus Rift.

Is there something special about 60 km that makes it extra computationally intensive?

Do we have any idea of the underlying cause?

I can confirm this. While hosting a mission yesterday on my DCS client, I was flying my AJS37 very low over Syria. The moment I turned my radar on, I was having really low FPS. I decided not to use the radar anymore till the mission was over.

Did you have frame problems at all ranges? I found things go back to normal if I use any radar range other than 60.

I've just tested the same mission in single player. Most of the time, range 60 is fine, and... range 120 is awful. But sometimes, it's the opposite. See:

I've done a second test tonight and I can confirm: the 60 km range is often OK for me. It's definitely the 120 km range which kills FPS on m rig.

I've found something interesting: when I do the exact same flight in a new mission with nothing on the map but my aircraft, the radar doesn't give any stutter. Stutterings probably comes from detected units. It would explain that we don't experiment stutters using the same ranges. You can do a simple test to be convinced: first face the frontline and experience sttutters, then turn 90° left or right (where there are no units in front of you) and the stuttering will disappear.

Now, all I have to do is removing units in my mission to find out if one of them triggers the stuttering on its own.
