tflash Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 I must say I turned into a Reaper fan. In my view some sleek aircraft! And what to say about the land-based "cockpit": Is that a Cougar Hotas or what? My guess is that Lockon 5.0 will bring armchair flight simulation closer to reality :D [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

tflash Posted June 28, 2008 Author Posted June 28, 2008 Reaper will be JDAM-capable soon. The whole point however is that an average F-16 burns 300lb of fuel before getting airborne, while a Reaper can fly a 16-hour mission with that amount of fuel. With the current energy crisis, this makes the swap of loads of tactical aircraft by UAV's a done deal. Of course, a manned fighter can in theory be dispatched more quickly to a Time-Sensitive Target, but chances are higher a predator is already in the air and nearby! UAV's are about exactly that: being in the air all the time, and not for sightseeing Hawaï but to support troops on the ground. No need to carry the weight of pilot + ejection seat along. You still need to train pilots for steering the craft however; at the moment these are pilots that come from manned aircraft. Maybe in the future it will be more like nerds and gamers instead of the sports athletes they recruite for manned flight? :D http://prometheus.med.utah.edu/~bwjones/C1311122445/E20080222191015/index.html [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
tflash Posted December 12, 2009 Author Posted December 12, 2009 (edited) MQ-1C fires hellfire missiles: http://www.aviationweek.com/aw/generic/story_channel.jsp?channel=defense&id=news/EAG121109.xml The MQ-1C combines the persistence and economy of the original Predator with the operational ceiling and sensor payload of the MQ-9 Reaper. It also features a more rugged heavy fuel engine. I still find the all-time classic Predator A tot have the sleekest lines, though. Edited December 12, 2009 by tflash [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

tflash Posted November 7, 2010 Author Posted November 7, 2010 Gorgon Stare doing away with tunnel vision: http://bit.ly/ctWM8C Now we are talking about true transformational technologies. The UAV as we know it is only the very beginning, its sensors and networked intelligence will grow at a google-like pace, I bet even faster than F-35 cost increase rate. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
SimFreak Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 at the moment these are pilots that come from manned aircraft. Maybe in the future it will be more like nerds and gamers instead of the sports athletes they recruite for manned flight? :D That's incorrect. Some operators are none-rated.
power5 Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 Predator is a wuss, reaper kicks butt. Can't wait for the avenger to enter service. Can't believe how long it has taken to get a jet powered UAV into service. Predator first flight was in the 90's. Avilator Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 Can't believe how long it has taken to get a jet powered UAV into service. What about Global Hawk? That's been in service for a while, right? I only respond to that little mechanical voice that says "Terrain! Terrain! Pull Up! Pull Up!" Dash Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 What about Global Hawk? That's been in service for a while, right? Not to mention the Firebee and its antecedents, which have been in service since the mid fifties.
power5 Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 Hmm, never heard of the global Hawk. Its Damn expensive though, wow. Dont consider the Firebee in the same field though since they are just target drones. revalence Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 You could also consider the Avenger made by the same maker of the MQ-1 and MQ-9 (General Atomics). http://defense-update.com/products/p/predator_c_avenger_180409.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Atomics_Avenger It looks quite promising, with a more potent payload and faster speed. Someday they will replace F-16s with drones of these!
Dash Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 Dont consider the Firebee in the same field though since they are just target drones. Ryan Model 147s flew thousands of reconnaissance missions during the cold war.
tflash Posted April 24, 2011 Author Posted April 24, 2011 U.S. Predator destroys rocket launcher in Libya http://news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/video/2011-04/24/c_13843604.htm "The next phase of the war has begun." Indeed bringing in the Predator is a game-changer. The predator can go lower and slower than the coalitions' 4th gen fighter jets and can yield much more precise results. It gives you not only a persistent eye on the battlefield, but gives you helicopter performance without the associated risk. In my view, it is becoming crystal clear what "5th generation" is really all about. It has little to do with Lockheed-Martins fading marketing message. What we now really need is hundreds of small-to-medium sized UCAV's that can be launched from carriers and assault ships. Hopefully some of the award fees that didn't went to F-35 ( http://bit.ly/dGM4op ) can be wisely spent on that. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
