Alexrey Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 I've never really used boresight mode because I don't see what the point of using it is, if vertical scan mode can lock on automatically. It feels like an inferior BVR mode. Could someone maybe tell me something that I don't know about? I read that it has a slightly further lock on range than vertical scan mode (how much further BTW?), but that's about all there is to it. Also I read somewhere that Russian heat-seekers can let off search and lock tones (love those sounds! :)), like the F-15C, in boresight mode, but I've never had this happen to me. How do I do it? Thanks guys, hope you can help!
Frostie Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 Bore mode in Russian planes imo is a waste of time, vertical, helmet or longitudal missile aim (for tone) is all you need. Bore mode has no advantage with range, all four CAC modes have the same range. "[51☭] FROSTIE" #55 'Red 5'. nscode Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 It has an advantage over vertical scan in that you can select a target to lock. You can also do this in helmet mode, but what if your helmet targeting system fails, or you just didn't feel like strapping the designator onto your helmet that day.. (not modeled :)) Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
S77th-konkussion Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 You can slew the BORESITE, making it a bit easier to get a lock in a turning fight, etc [sIGPIC]http://forums.eagle.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=43337&d=1287169113[/sIGPIC]
Pilotasso Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 You can use bore to make a rapid succession of shots if you manage to surprise and sneak upon more than 1 bandit. .
Alexrey Posted May 24, 2008 Author Posted May 24, 2008 You can use bore to make a rapid succession of shots if you manage to surprise and sneak upon more than 1 bandit. I'm not too sure what you mean by this. And how can I make the R-73/R-27ET let off search and lock sounds like the American heat-seekers?
Rhino4 Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 You can use bore to make a rapid succession of shots if you manage to surprise and sneak upon more than 1 bandit. Longitudinal aim mode is better for this imho. No need to get a lock, just point and shoot. It's also much more precise when dealing with groups of closely bunched enemies. @Alexrey: longitudinal aim mode (6) will give you a tone when you are pointed at a target that the seeker is able to aquire. No need to wait for a lock, just point and fire when you get a tone, or simply authorize the launch (alt-w) and fire without one. It's up to you.
IvanK Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 Bore sight lock should be a lot quicker than Vert Acq... well it was 20 years ago in the Bug :)

Depends on target separation and the geography of the place. If you flying in a valey using longitudinal aim will render you exposed or drive you into a mountain by accident. Besides its faster than aiming that small R-73 reticle. .
rogue_blade Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 just use boresight if your target is right out infront of you and WVR it gives your radar probably the least amount of work to do. use VS when in a turning fight. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
