Hello,

Now I started getting this error 4-1 in WMR. DCS runs usually for a few minutes, then the HMD suddenly flashes blue then goes black. The DCS desktop copy image continues to show for a few seconds then DCS  and SteamVR crash. Afterwards WMR shows error 4-1.  When this error is showing, if I look at the Reverb in device manager it says "Working properly but USB speed too slow". I've been using the USB-C port but using the standard USB ports with the adaptors doesn't fix the problem.

Initially, I thought this was a hardware issue. I suspected the complex connector that slides into the HMD, which doesn't seem to have a true locking mechanism. I suspected it was getting loose with movement. However, after some testing, there have been several instances where the error goes away just by rebooting without any movement of the HMD or cable at all. So this seems to be some sort of software problem.

Has anyone else experienced this and has any clues on a fix?

this might be relevant ? I had to buy a usb hub to get the rift s to work correctly. Mobo usb ports not hot enough

Thanks. The Reverb has a separate power supply and uses the usb for the tracking data, but i'll try the hub...who knows.

Do you have an AMD Cpu?  HP and AMD are working on a bios fix for their usb chipsets to solve some compatibility issues that they have been having.  Intel chipsets can be problematic as well, but not as bad as AMD.

I started having this problem intermittently, and it got worse. Basically, anytime I moved my head too much or too fast, the screen would flash blue then go black. WMR would see the G2 as disconnected. I tried flexing the cable and wiggling the connection to look for a cable/connection problem, but I could only consistently reproduce the problem by moving my head.

HP Support told me to send it back for a new one. They FedEXed me a box with a shipping label. I have already sent mine back. Waiting to see a response indicating a new one or repaired one is on the way.

Ouch, good to know. I guess i better talk to HP support. Now that you say that, i'm pretty sure mine does it right when i'm moving my head. Last time it happened as I was going inverted and looked up to keep track of the ground.

On the CPU, I have an Intel W-10885M currently.

The support person did not suggest that to me. I gladly would have tried it. But my G2 was received by HP last night. So, hopefully, the new one arrives soon. I am flying with the Rift S and Quest 2 right now. The Quest 2 is in between the Rift S and G2 in graphics quality, but is not nearly as comfortable as the Rift S and G2. The Quest 2 also has a battery that needs to stay charged. Since I turn my PC off after flying at night, it doesn't get charged overnight. I will say that the Rift S has far superior tracking in every way (stability, precision, smoothness) than the G2. The G2 has always given me minor problems with freezes and glitches while looking around. Maybe mine was a bad one from the start? Maybe my earphones were loose from the start? The G2 display is so superior, it is hard to give up, but if I could have the G2 hardware with the Oculus software, I would be much happier. WMR/SteamVR has some advantages, but overall is inferior to my experience with the Oculus software using the Rift CV1/Rift S/Quest 2.

Yep, I RMA'd mine last night. Didn't even call HP just used the support chat. The asked 2 things: whether i updated the bios and if i tried a hub and then they just offered to replace it.

amen brother!  using the Oculus software/startup is heaven compared to the convoluted WMR... 😀

I used the support chat, too. They asked a few questions but didn't have me do anything creative like unscrewing the headphones. I will say that I moved them extensively trying to trigger a fail: slid them up and down full extension and rotated them. The only way I got a fail is by moving my head as opposed to flexing the cable or tugging on the cable to try to wiggle the connector. It seems like something inside the headset didn't like the acceleration. But was it an electrical/mechanical failure or an electronic chip failure?

It will be interesting to see if the new one behaves better out of the box or if it exhibits some of the same little tracking/display quirks.

it is very strange. While I wait for the HP box I have been experimenting with the G2 some more. I have left it completely static on the table running the WMR house or Minecraft, and even completely stationary with no cable movement it still fails in a few minutes. That usually points to something (like an eye pattern on the cable?) that changes with temperature as the device heats up. I'm curious to know what the problem actually is, but we might never know.

I'm getting a Pimax 8KX tomorrow, it'll be interesting to see if it has the ghosting I saw on the Reverb. Since I don't have VR now I went back to 2D and I am able to replicate the stuttering I saw while banking by adding SSAA and looking out the side with the keypad. If I remove SSAA however, it goes away and runs perfectly smooth in 2D. I do not see any of the ghosting, so that is VR related.

Yes, ghosting is a VR thing caused by motion reprojection. But for me the G2 caused almost no ghosting compared to the Rift S. Almost any time I got in close with a fighter with the Rift S, I would see ghosts unless it was a clean terrain like Nevada with nothing else to process besides the opponent and myself. Using the G2 I rarely see ghosting. The Quest 2 still suffered from ghosting, but not as much as the Rift S.

Coming from Rift S to Reverb G2 myself, that has also been my experience.

Very happy running with Motion Smoothing forced on with my G2.

Well now that you both point that out, i'm wondering if what i'm seeing is ghosting:

I have motion smoothing/reprojection disabled. For example I set 'Use SteamVR settings' in WMR and set SteamVR to disable Motion Smoothing.

I start the Caucasus free flight and look left, there is a thin coastline. I then roll left and right trying different roll rates, and I find that there are certain roll rates where that coastline is doubled. Once I see it I can't unsee it, and it happens in other situations.

Yes, I also get double items with reprojection disabled in SteamVR, which is reduced with it on. Counter intuitive.

I tried forced on, forced off, and auto. Auto jumps too much. My frame rates aren't high enough to work well with it off... too unstable like Auto. So forced on it is. Staying at or near 45 fps with little or no ghosting is pretty good compared to 40 fps with lots of ghosting in the Rift S.

I got the Pimax 8KX today...Reverb G2 owners should be thankful. This thing is instant eye strain, i'm trying to figure out if tuning will fix it, already found a gazillion threads with the same issue.

More excited about the empty box I got from HP today, hopeful for quick turnaround!

Try updating your motherboard bios.  This seemed to help for me (AMD).  Powered USB hub seems to be the other popular solution but I haven't had to try that yet.

Yep BIOS and everything else is up to date, but thanks for the suggestion. I also tried several hubs, and even different machines. It was definitely the headset in my case. Headed back to HP today.

After a month of good use with my G2 today the right lens just started flickering and there is vertical coloured lines on the left of the right lens that move and warp with movement telling me it's a software issue. So utterly disappointed with the G2, I'm starting to now see more and more people reporting faults. I think there needs to be more people coming fourth with the problems rather than the loud bunch whom scream "mine is fine so there is nothing to see here".

Really don't want to have to deal with HP support and get mine replaced because I really don't have faith that this won't happen again.

Yeah, after recent my crash course in VR it really seems there are no perfect options right now. I also got to try the Index in addition to the Pimax, so i'm up to 3 headsets I've tested with DCS. Of the three, the reverb is the only one that resulted in absolutely no eye strain, no sde and the fact that it tracks without base stations is very convenient for a simulator setup. It is a shame that it seems to be plagued by defects.

The Pimax is the most problematic of all. The IPD design where the screens don't move with the lenses is flawed. It has the fuzziest optics of them all. The tracking constantly shakes slightly when your head is still in the cockpit. It has LCD mura, and it is uncomfortable. The only good thing about the Pimax is the FOV, but it doesn't outweigh the other problems in my opinion.

The Index is more comfortable like the Reverb and it has a proper IPD adjustment, although I haven't been able to find the sweetspot for no eye strain yet. The FOV can be very good and is adjustable. It uses the base stations which is a downside for sims imo. The SDE is pretty bad, but I thought since the resolution is the lowest it will run DCS great. Unfortunately. anytime I use it, I am plagued by constant stutters(not DCS, any applicaiton), and it is unusable. If I keep the rest of the setup static and just switch to another headset, the stutters go away.

Someday...there will be a VR headset that works....

The HP website for tracking my return says the best estimate for a replacement/repaired headset is 03/12/21.

In the interim I have been bouncing between my son's Quest 2 I got him for Christmas and my Rift S.

The Quest 2 is halfway between the Rift S and G2 in image quality, but I have had problems with it randomly disconnecting from the PC in the middle of DCS. I suspect it is because I am saturating my USB 3 port by raising both the image quality and refresh rates to the limits, but it could simply be a hardware/software problem, too. So, for reliability, I have settled on the Rift S, which isn't so bad as it is what I have been using before I got the G2 at the end of November.

That is terrible they can not cover you with a warranty replacement any sooner than that.
