That's really cool. The liner notes are pretty interesting.

 

The APS13 is modeled in DCS for the P51D. It does work, but it can be annoying as it is in no way an IFF system.

According to your theory, the Mustangs (they were from blocks D-20/-25) from pictures below should not exist.

But they did, so something wrong is here...

Maybe by 1954 when this manual was issued APS-13 sets were removed from D-Mustangs?

 

The radar is neatly described and shown in better known August '45 manual though.

 It's also useless below 4,000ft because it will incessently ring the alarm even when your tail is pointed away from the ground and there's no one behind you.

I have Late New Zealand manual for P-51D which don't mention this an/aps-13.

I believe that this was just optional equipment.

Mustang IV manual does not mention this an/aps-13

Probably all non USAAF P-51D were missing this equipment.
