Crash after 1-2 min flying

Hey @Klabo. You're having the "DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED" kind of crash. It means the game loses communication with the GPU. From the outside, it sounds like a graphics driver issue, but it's not always the case. Cause number one and two are GPU and RAM overclocking. However, sometimes it's caused by a small pagefile.

I see your pagefile is quite small (5GB), and I know DCS often doesn't like that very much.

2021-02-10 06:28:48.211 INFO DCS: CPU cores: 6, threads: 12, System RAM: 32710 MB, Pagefile: 5120 MB

Manually edit your Windows pagefile settings:

  • Disable automatic handling of pagefile
  • Set initial size to 32768 (32 GB)
  • Set max size to 32768 (32 GB)

Next time you launch DCS, the log should show a 32 GB pagefile. Please let us know how it goes.

Unfortunately, the pagefile trick didn't help. You're still getting the "DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED" error.

Here are links to solutions that worked for some users:

Empty "C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp|\DCS.Openbeta" folder.

Disable ingame SSLR.

Remove GPU overclocking.

Remove RAM overclocking.

Remove dust from CPU coooler.

Change PSU.

If none of them work, please attach your dxdiag log.

Klabo,

Down-clock your GPU. Crashes to desktop are often, if not usually, causes by excessively high GPU clock speeds.

Graphics cards are often heavily overclocked right from the factory, so even if you have not overclocked yours, it might be running much too fast already and it isn't quite stable. The GPU crashes and the sim dumps you to the Windows desktop--that's why you're getting the DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED error.

Down-clock your GPU by maybe 200 MHz or thereabouts and try again. Once it's stable, bump the GPU clock up again in small increments until you find a nice, fast speed where it's still completely stable.

Worked for me.

Hi @Klabo. According to MSI, your RAM must be overclocked to run @3600 on your motherboard (XMP enabled = OC).

This is probably the change that DCS can't stand: your previous RAM was not overclocked, but your new RAM is.

image.png

Try lowering your RAM OC, and if DCS keeps crashing, try disabling XMP completely (@2666). At least, we'll know if the DCS issue comes from your RAM OC or not.

OK. Please try what is often suggested by ED crew:

  1. Rename your Saved Games\DCS folder as "DCS.backup". The game will subsequently start with default settings and default controls.
  2. Launch any mission and see if you keep crashing.
  3. Still crashing? Then try a cleanup and repair.

After all this, if you keep getting the same DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED crash, open a support ticket if you haven't already.

Thanks for the tests. You keep having the same symptom, which is a repetition of the "DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED" message from the moment the mission starts (3 seconds after the "GRAPHICSVISTA: Creating Resource "Unicode" of type 1" message).

I've just read you couldn't find the Temp\DCS.openbeta folder. Just copy-paste this and you'll find the folder I was talking about: %HOMEPATH%\AppData\Local\Temp

Then simply delete the "DCS.openbeta" folder you'll find in there.

Klabo,

Did you try down-clocking your GPU? The "DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED" message means your GPU is crashing. That's why your system is crashing to desktop instead of giving you a Blue Screen.

Messing around with reinstalling/repairing DCS isn't gonna help with that and neither will re-installing Windows and/or changing graphics drivers most of the time.

If it's always, always doing it, and muffing about with graphics drivers, Windows settings, repairs/reinstalling, different brand of beer, different swear words etc. aren't helping, it's probably an excessive GPU clock--even if you haven't overclocked your GPU.

It's very common for GPUs to be factory overclocked excessively right out of the box. Great benchmark scores, but lousy stability. Reduce GPU clock speed and fly a while, see what happens!

Open support ticket to ED 5 days ago and no answer yet?

All games work just fine I have just flying games. I can do on my comp. anything for hours. Play games on line of line all good until I get in to DCS .

Well after flying DCS for over 20 years and spending bunch of many on it and because of it, going to put this former awesome game.

But have to admit still better then toaster made in you all know where.
