I don't want to spoil the thread, but I've noticed this topic here since a while ago and my thought has always been why would you want live weather in a combat sim?

Weather is an important part of mission design, and if it becomes randomized, you have problems. A LGB or visual strike on a bridge doesn't work if the bridge is covered in fog and low clouds. Temperature changes engine performance and range, so waypoints may need to be updated along with ceilings for certain threats. If you're in an area prone to extreme weather, you might not even be able to takeoff safely. It seems like live weather would just be a pain. It works better in non combat sims because there is less to plan for.

All of that said, we end users can use our discretion in turning options on and off, so I'm not against adding live weather. There are also plenty of people that free flight in DCS or use it as a civil sim anyway. However we probably need some additional options to make live weather fit into the combat side of things. Perhaps live weather could be edited for particular missions. So for example if there is a LGB strike on a bridge, the mission would download live weather for the map but exclude clouds below XXXXX feet. The same could be applied for temperature and wind speed, letting them vary up to certain limits.

Personally I think scripted evolving weather would be higher on the priority list, but I might use a live weather option on occasion.

In nearly all DCS missions currently the weather is hardly a factor. It’s nearly always noon,  broken clouds, no wind… Weather is hugely important in real world civilian and combat aviation and it needs to be better represented in DCS. Having real world dynamic historical weather available would mean mission designers could still choose the conditions they wanted.

In addition, in real world there would be "secondary targets" planned for in case of the primary targets being weathered-in.

Cheers!

I'm not against live weather as an option, it's just that despite so many requests for it, there doesn't seem to be much consideration for the problems it causes in mission building. If a mission is set to just copy realtime weather, the weather in the mission effectively becomes random, and this could make the mission unreasonable or impossible to complete. I just wanted to point this out so that it's taken into consideration with the live weather feature. For example things like wind speed/temperature/cloud density limitations that can be turned on or off as needed.

i agree with you. my assumption has always been that people wishing for "live" weather have never actually thought it through. maybe they also do not really differentiate between "live" and dynamic weather. simulated, dynamic weather would obviously be the best for dcs. another interesting feature could be "historic" weather to quickly set up well.. historicaly accurate missions. technically it's the same as "live" weather, onyl difference being that it is fed from historical weather data instead of live weather data.

Live weather could be cool when/if the DC ever releases. Would make long campaigns interesting. Real world pilots have to deal with it. Obviously it would be optional, but it could add that extra level of realism for those who want it. Live weather is about as random and dynamic as it gets. It definitely wouldn’t hurt just to have the option available🤷‍♂️

Eh, we have forecasting. Basically there is a link between what is likely in terms of weather and how the mission is planned. If weather were truly random and unpredictable, flying would be very different. We can't predict the weather perfectly of course, but it's unlikely that if the forecast is a clear day, and the mission is planned around that, that a hurricane will move in and make flying impossible, which is a possibility with uncurated live weather.

You don’t live in Idaho do you 😂 😃  What you’re saying makes sense, of course.  Anyone into that level of realism would, I suppose, check forecasts and data when planning out a mission. Even on an on going dynamic campaign, at the given time of flight. So the in game “dynamic weather” generator would probably be more random in fact, since you wouldn’t have data to go off of, in theory, and if it worked correctly lol With moving clouds and changing weather systems baked in the game, generating dynamic weather could get you a good idea at the start of the mission but who knows what it would produce in an hour or two.  I, personally, if the option was available would most likely start a campaign or mission and select live weather , or dynamic for that matter, and just go and see what it brings.

Maybe the better option for DCS would be to have the weather not baked into the missions themselves or have to modify in the ME. Maybe starting any mission you want the being able to select the weather type on the fly would make things more interesting🤷‍♂️ But then what about missions/ campaigns designed around certain weather? Can’t really do a case III recovery when its nice and sunny out lol…. Quite the conundrum

I hope ED add life weather system like it is in MFS.

I don't get it. Unless you live there where your action is taking place (i.e. on one of the maps), whatever use is live weather to you?

I prefer the ability to set the weather on-the-fly when starting the mission without having to go into Mission Editor. But live weather? Whatever for? Especially when it probably means IMC for 50% of the time. I fail to the the added value of that. Historical weather, maybe. Live? No priority for me.

Whatever you say. I have my own opinion on this. Besides Im not talking about live weather only but option to have it.
