When Petrovich identifies a target, you can disengage from his target of choice with the “short down” toggle. However, when Petrovich identifies multiple targets, the “short down” toggle allows you to select the next target down in the list, this results in not being able to disengage from his target selection. This is really a pain in the **** when his list just contains infantry.

In the scenario of the Petrovich target list, how do you disengage from that selection?

you simply select a target with the right short and then disengage with the down short. Perhaps I don't understand your question fully?

As far as infantry it seems silly to me to have single soldiers in the first place, would be better to have infantry "squads" of 10 soldiers and this would equate to one targe and would scale better.

Completely agree with that. It would also make it so much easier to place infantry (and also armoured groups) in the mission editor if the came as preset squads, as you say.
