I'd be fine with either that, or something further to the South around the Aleutian Islands, especially given that these islands were the site of a couple minor WW2 skirmishes.

That would be a good World War II map. The only problem with doing Alaksa is that it is just huge

Only thing I worry about is having a flat map, a bering strait map (if it includes mainland on each end),would end up looking fairly distorted on a flat map. Though personally, I'd prefer the GIUK gap, including at least Iceland as landmass. But I wouldn't say no to a Bering strait map. The only question about the either of these maps, is how big should they be? A map of Alaska would be 663,268 sq mi (1,717,856 km2), the largest military bases are in Fairbanks and Anchorage I'm not sure how far west you would need to go to hit a base in Russia 2 1

There is an airbase in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (Elizovo), basing a fair amount of different types (both currently and historically) of aircraft (MiG-31, Tu-16, Tu-95, Su-15, Be-12), not sure where the most western US AFB is in Alaska (don't think there are any NAS), probably Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, but then you might as well go a bit further east and get Clear AFB and Eielson AFB. But then you've got quite a huge amount of land area, possibly a lot of trees. But at least it's not densely populated by urban areas (most dense area is probably Anchorage and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky). rkk01 Posted July 5, 2021 Posted July 5, 2021 (edited) Fascinating Cold War ops from the Aleutian Islands… the sums of money in these black ops programmes is eye watering given the dates Shemya, Rivet Ball, Rivet Amber Looks like Shemya AFB is west of the Bering Strait…! The distance from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to Anchorage is about 2000 miles. Currently Anchorage is about 300,000 which is slightly larger than Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsk Looking at the map, the we'll have the Aleutian Islands too. SO We'll have Atu and Kiska as well as Adiak Naval air station Let's see if you know which side of the strait the following pic is from.. Edited July 5, 2021 by upyr1
rkk01 Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 Shemya Islsnd / USAF Eareckson Air Station is almost at the western end of the Aleutian chain - just east of Attu… … roughly 1000km from the Russian base at Elizovo / Petropavlovsk - so a lot closer than the mainland Alaskan bases
