I am new at VR with flight sims.  I just purchased the HP Reverb G2 headset.  It works fine in MSFS 2020, but will not open in DCS.  I have Windows Mixed Reality open, start DCS, choose a flight, but the headset does not display the flight, nor the DCS intro screen.  What am I missing here?  Thanks.  --db

Check enable VR headset. You need to bridge DCS through steamvr to use WMR.

Thanks.  Since I already have DCS installed, how do I bridge DCS through steamvr?

So you need to have steam, and then get steam VR. Add DCS to your steam library (assuming it is not the steam version) and open it all up. Make sure enable VR headset is checked in the DCS options. It's a bit of a faff but because WMR is not natively supported by DCS they need to talk via a steam VR. Once you got it all set up it's fairly easy.

Follow the linked guide above.

Very good.  So, just to make sure...  When I power on my computer with the headset on WMR opens and I use that for MSFS 2020.  To use DCS I open SteamVR, then start DCS, and fly.  Correct?

Assume you've installed Steam, Steam VR and WMR for SteamVR ? You need all 3. Once done..

Run the Steam app. Bottom left hand corner, "Add a Game", "Add a non-Steam game" and add DCS..

It should now appear in the left panel. (I add it to favourites) Open its properties and tick "Include in VR Library"

Now you'll see it in your Steam VR library when you run Steam VR and you can run it from there.

Doing this also lets you set Steam VR options specifically for DCS , such as resolution and motion smoothing.

That said, after doing the above you shouldn't need to run Steam VR first to run DCS. When your headset is powered and WMR is running, if you run DCS from your desktop Steam VR will recognise it and load in the background automatically.

First thing to do: reduce the resolution in steamVR settings. Steam does a very intense supersampling by default, you have to reduce it if you like frames per second.

Out of curiosity, what if your installation and all your modules were not purchased through steam, but from ED store, are you unable to use the G2?

Doesn't matter. You can ONLY run the G2 via SteamVR. I bought all my modules direct from ED store, but I still have to launch SteamVR to run my G2 in DCS.

Ok this means that even if your installation is outside of steam, dcs / G2 can still pipe steamvr api. That's nice.

Ok guys , you are ignoring my question though. I am on the verge of buying this thing. My rig is i5 11600k , rtx 3080, 32gb ram @3200 mhz and m.2 gen 4 hard drive

Am I gonna be able to spot ground targets without hardship or it is all blurry and difficult? Would you recommend this headset

Shall we say it's as good as any currently available headset (with possibly the exception of the new Varjo Aero) and better than most for that. I've been very happy with mine for nearly a year now. Clarity in the cockpit is excellent, all dials easily readable. Clarity at range is finding a compromise between that and FPS. So if you run with MSAA x 4, resolution at 100%, visible range at ultra, it'll be crystal, but that's gonna hurt your frames. There are numerous excellent mods to tune that. I highly recommend reading the thread I linked to earlier in this thread. Bottom line is it takes a little study and experimentation to nail your best performance, but worth the effort. Your rig is certainly up to it. I certainly have no problem spotting ground targets.

I've used G2 now for about 8 months. Works fine. My MSI laptop specs are quite a bit worse than yours, so should run just fine.  I've tweaked settings for months to find the ideal balance, and right now it works really well. You can spot ground targets without too much difficulty. Infantry might be hard from a fast jet, but certainly no issue from helicopters. Yes I would absolutely recommend the G2.
